Canvey homeowners without power after lorry pulls down electricity cables

HOMEOWNERS on Canvey are expecting to be without power overnight after a lorry struck overhead electricity cables.

Police and firefighters from Rayleigh were called to Haven Road at about 1pm today after the Polish driver got into difficulty while turning round in an area opposite the Lobster Smack pub.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "A driver of a lorry appears to have lost control of the vehicle while travelling along Haven Road, it struck electricity cables and the driver's details have been given to the electricity company.

"He was not injured and not subject of a police investigation."

Informative and accurate journalism from the Echo as usual.

Is it the whole of Canvey? I find it hard to believe one pole being knocked down can wipe out the electricity of over 50,000 residents

I saw a Polish driver once. Can't remember now if it was Clarks or Cherry Blossom but the truck was massive. Didn't see the driver hit any power lines though.

Phoned my mum just now and she says her part of Canvey still has electricity. Mind you, she doesn't use much so she may have just a little bit left in the wires.

I hope that helps.

It does not say the pole hit a pole. Says he hit electricity cables. Have to ask really why the cables were that low that they could be hit? We're there signs up to say low high voltage cables?

I don't know that area well so just wondered

I'm assuming the lorry driver took the new road to no where and turned right instead of left at the mini roundabout. Again I'm assuming the leccy board didnt expect artics to be visiting the dead end and so assumed low level cables would have been ok at the time of installation. Oh how times are a changing.....

I was going to say it's because they probably have far better things to do with their time but then I weighed up the evidence in favour of such an argument and found it seriously flawed.

we were there just had lunch only to have the pub closed not only no electric but unable to pay for meals or leave the car park, as the lines came down across the path of entry.
god knows what the driver was of thinking of trying to turn the lorry around in such a cramped condition, dont know how he did it.
