Six men arrested in major police operation in Basildon
6:57pm Tuesday 9th October 2012 in News
Seized: Some of the vehicles taken away by Police
SIX men have been arrested and 14 vehicles seized in a major police operation in Basildon.
Over 40 police officers took part in Operation Surround A Town today, carrying out roadside checks and mobile patrols around Basildon.
Four men aged 24, 29, 32 and 36 who were all from East London were arrested on suspicion of stealing clothing from a charity after a truck loaded with British Heart Foundation collection bags was stopped near Billericay.
A 25-year-old man from Basildon was also arrested on suspicion of being involved in a domestic assault and a 25-year-old man from East London was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified and possessing cannabis.
More than 320 vehicles were stopped and checked. Fourteen vehicles were seized for no insurance, 103 had expired MOTs, 102 people were not wearing seatbelts and 40 drivers were seen using mobile phones.
More than 30 other motor offences were also discovered.
The operation was also part of Essex County Council’s three-year No Excuse campaign to tackle motoring offences and raise awareness that there is no excuse for offences such as speeding, driving while using a mobile phone, not wearing seat belts or driving without insurance or valid driving documents.
All six of the arrested men remain in custody for further questioning.

Seems like a good days work then. Should have this widespread then the people who do not wish to drive legally will gradually be found by the net.

ar maintenance etc.) while toerags who couldn't care less about anyone else's safety zoom around causing danger in cars that aren't legally safe or insured, chatting on their mobiles etc. Definitely happy to see more of this and hope the motorists caught endangering other road users in one way or another are dealt with heavily.

Could not agree more - more effective for road safety than speed cameras will ever be, mind you speed cameras have nothing to do with safety any way. As people slow down and bunch up as they go pass the cameras(even those not speeding),they are more dangerous than safe. They are only there to collect money not safety concerns.

But back to Basildon, well to be honest, I think that once again its just another money making opportunity for the government. We pay enough in insurance, petrol, tax etc.. And then Mr plod who we pay their wages, decide to stop us for speeding. Who cares about speeding, I do it everyday, only been caught once in nearly 4 years, and will continue to do it. My car. My rules.

If you want to a catch a law breaker, then the police should go to Sweden. If you go on YouTube, and put in 'ghostrider' its a stuntman that weaves in and out of traffic on Sweden motorways on his modified Suzuki Gsxr 1000. Sometimes reaching speeds of 200MPH. I see you say you pay your insurance, why is that? You pay your VED too I take it, why?
But you're happy for people who don't pay for insurance, or their VED, to carry on? But if that's the case - why do you pay it?
And yes fair enough, your car, your rules, I agree, I have that argument every time someone in my car changes the radio. But the speed limit is set to the ROAD, not your car. It isn't your road now is it, therefore, it's not your rules...
