THE future of a 30-foot sports cage which was put up without permission at Castle View School in Canvey is set to be decided at a planning meeting.

Essex County councillors will decide if the hammer throwing, shotput and discus facility at the £28million school in Foksville Road, Canvey should remain.

Neighbours in Ash Road and Bramble Road say the cage dwarfs their bungalows, and said workmen had made the issue even worse by cutting back trees surrounding the site, making the metal structure impossible to ignore.

Residents said they had no idea the cage was coming despite it being part of the former Furtherwick Park School which was demolished to make way for the new Castle View building.

Brian Wood, UK Independent Party county councillor for Canvey East ward, will be speaking against the cage on behalf of residents at the meeting.

He said: “I will be speaking at the meeting in objection to the cage because it is an eyesore and should never have gone up in the first place.

“Residents should not have to be subjected to this when it could be placed anywhere on the rest of the field."

The school is now applying for retrospective planning permission for the sports cage.

The public meeting is taking place at county hall in Chelmsford on Friday, October 26 at 10.30am.
