Pipe of Port relaunches with new Rat Pack night

A POPULAR restaurant has been taken off the market and is to be revived as a live music venue.

The Pipe of Port in Southend High Street will host regular Rat Pack style nights kicking off on Friday October 19.

Owners Steve Jones and his business partner and sister-n-law Janet Cliff put The Pipe of Port up for sale in July for £325,000 but have changed tact and instead decided to relaunch.

Steve, who has been at the Pipe for 31 years, said: “Janet had deep reservations about it and not much was happening with the sale.

“We decided it wasn’t such a good idea to sell and thought about what would happen if we stayed. So we’ve decided to hang on in there and since we told people we’ve been really touched. We’ve had 100s of messages of support from customers pleased we’ve changed our minds. It’s really heart warming.”

A very difficult business to be in at the moment. I hope they don't make the same mistake as SS9 did - if it ain't broke don't rebrand it!

Delighted that they have decided to abandon this sale as the PoP is just about the only good thing that remains of our once great High Street.

OK, so we are not exactly talking Michelin star cuisine (although it really is pretty good) but at least it has a bit of character and some decent people running it - not the usual Southend 'buy a bar and get rich quick by attracting young binge drinkers' type landlords. I doubt that when I am next there having a few ales that I will be in much danger of having my head stamped on by another customer or of the police raiding the place for drugs. Long live the PoP!

Great news! Hope the menu stays the same with maybe some specials of the week/month. Not so sure about the Rat Pack scenario but if it's only a Friday night it can be avoided by those not interested. Keep at it Steve and Janet....big 25th celebrations must be due soon!!!! Good Luck.

Is that the same Sergeant Danny Barnes formerly of the early Police Interceptor episodes (did he transfer to Southend or was he posted?!) who picked up a discarded carrier bag of dog sh1t thinking it was drugs?

Obviously he still has difficulty telling the difference between the two.
