Primary school child excluded after canteen rampage
4:00pm Monday 22nd October 2012 in News
A PRIMARY school pupil has been excuded following allegations he ran through the building with a knife, made racist comments and assaulted two teachers.
Police are now investigating the incident which involved a 10-year-old pupil at Eastwood Primary School, in Rayleigh Road, who went on the rampage in the canteen.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “Police were contacted by the headteacher of Eastwood Junior School shortly before 9.30am on Thursday October 18, who was reporting a student had been involved in a knife-related incident the previous day.
“A ten-year-old boy from the Southend area had run through the building with a children’s cutlery knife before it was taken off him by staff.
“He was excluded from the school for four days.”
Officers will be speaking to the headteacher on Friday lunch-time to take a statement from her.
Police said they had no previous involvement with this boy. Headteacher Rebecca Perman said she could not comment on the case for confidentiality reasons.
She added: “The case is being investigated by external agencies. I can’t discuss it with you because it’s an ongoing inevstigation.”
However, she stressed that there had been no previous incidents involving this child having a blade.
Jane Theadom, Southend Council’s Head of School Support and Preventative Services, said: “The Council can confirm that an incident took place at Eastwood Primary School on Wednesday during which a Year Six pupil made racist comments to another child.
“The pupil later assaulted two members of staff. We are unable to give any further details at present because the matter is currently the subject of an investigation by Essex Police.
“However we can confirm that in the interests of the safety of all concerned the child involved was immediately excluded from school to allow for a thorough investigation to take place.”

It is a non story. It is being dealt with by the school and the appropriate authorities, but unfortunately because the Echo has chosen to highlight it, the anti is raised - a boy's character tarnished, for everyone in the school community including pupils and parents will be able to work out who he is - along with the reputation of a good school.

As usual, the Echo is told about an incident is a school and choses to make it a big issue. As far as I can gather, nobody was injured and the story revolves around a pupil who, it can only be assumed, is a troubled young boy for children do not chose to behave like this. It is a non story. Now, having been fed on this, we have a number of people making comments which are derogatory and damning of a boy and his circumstances despite not knowing any of the facts.
I rest my case.

The original reason for my commenting was the sensationalistion of a non-story. Using words like 'rampage' and 'blade' conjour up all sorts of mayhem. Now, having been fed on this, we have a number of people making comments which are derogatory and damning of a boy and his circumstances despite not knowing any of the facts. I rest my case.

So far, it hasn't been rebutted.
Spare the rod and spoil the child - this would appear to be a prime example.
(Please note the use of the word 'appear')

If a school full of teachers can't control a 10 year old (even if he is holding some kind of blade) then something's badly wrong!
Alternatively it could just be sensationalist journalism ;-)

Sorry..... a 10 year old cannot "go on a rampage" as that would imply the child was "uncontrollable". If a school full of teachers can't control a 10 year old (even if he is holding some kind of blade) then something's badly wrong! Alternatively it could just be sensationalist journalism ;-)

I have plenty of nieces and nephews and been to many of their Birthday parties so I know exactly what school kids are like!
In fact my nephew is 8 and can be a bit of a handful.... well actually a lot of a handful but I'd say he isn't capable of a "rampage".
Yes, a child running around with a knife and shouting nasty things isn't something that went on when I was at school but even so, there should be members of staff who are capable of dealing with this/containing the sitation.
I would hazard a guess that it's more down to having their hands tied behind their backs by politics & guidelines rather than not physically being able to do something but either way it's a sad state of affairs..........
Whilst I accept schools & kids have changed, I would suggest the change isn't for the better.
Personally, if I'd have behaved like that at 10 years old (25 years ago in case you were wondering) I would have expected to get the slipper from the head master, put in isolation indefinitely and then christ knows what from my parents!!!!!
Probably the reason I behaved in school was because of such threats if I misbehaved, I think it's time to accept that the softly softly approach has been largely ineffective in raising well behaved kids and responsible adults.
Not saying for one minute kids should be beaten for not lacing up their shoes correctly but the balance needs to be shifted and kids taught there are unpleasant consequencies if they don't behave as expected.

The school has to take some responsibility for this too. Very easy to get rid of him and wash their hands? Stop being so judgemental.
The horrid things some of you are saying about the parents makes you just as bad and bullies in your own way.
