BASILDON brides-to-be are sweating over their big days after a wedding shop went out of business.

Wedding Day Belles in South Walk closed down at the weekend - with 14 women still waiting for their dresses.

Linda Rogers, 25, of Caister Drive, Pitsea, was so worried she would not get her £800 gown in time for her August wedding, she took matters into her own hands.

As police watched, she helped herself to a dress of the same value during the store's closing down sale on Saturday.

Officers mediated while the owner and Miss Rogers agreed she would take the replacement dress and return it to police if her ordered dress arrives.

John and Julie Gearing, who ran the shop, have vowed to deliver all orders despite facing financial ruin.

Mr Gearing, 49, of Oakhurst Drive, Wickford, said: "We have lost everything, but these brides won't have lost anything because we have borrowed money from a relative to ensure we can fulfill every order."

Mrs Gearing, 48, added: "We wanted to make sure they have their dresses because otherwise I couldn't sleep at night."

Mr Gearing said the couple might lose their home and have to file for bankruptcy after investing their life savings in the business, which opened in November 2006.

Documents obtained by the Echo show the shop's accounts are overdue and it now faces being struck off by Companies House. Dad-of-two Mr Gearing said rental costs - which soared from £25,000 a year to £34,000 - and poor sales led the shop to shut.

He said: "We needed to sell three to four dresses a week to break even, but we were selling that a month.

"People just aren't getting married and people are getting dresses a lot cheaper on the internet.

"We thought this would provide us with a pension, but we have lost everything."

Miss Rogers had still not received her ivory gown from the shop a month after it was due to arrive.

Although she now has a replacement she may have to change her colour scheme, costing nearly £1,000 extra, if her original frock does not turn up as promised.

She said: "I don't really wear dresses and this was my dream wedding outfit. The whole thing has been a complete nightmare, I've hardly slept."

  • Mr and Mrs Gearing are trying to track down a woman called Carrie-Anne who paid for her dress for an August wedding.

Her outfit has arrived but theyhave no contact details for her.

Anyone who knows her or has any queries about their dresses can contact the Gearings on 07964 734839.

If the couple have gone to these measures to ensure all orders are fulfilled then surely they need a pat on the back. They have a conscience that many in the same position would not have. I can appreciate exactly how worrying this is for the brides waiting for their dresses but it seems the Gearing are doing their best.

What a complete waste of police time - especially as Mr & Mrs Gearing are actually trying to help people.

Wedding insurance, Ms. Rogers....?

I bought a dress from Wedding Day Belles for my wedding last year. Every single member of staff, especially Mrs Gearing (never met her Husband) made me feel comfortable and welcome in the shop. I know for a fact that she will not let ANYONES day be ruined and will do her best to get all dresses to the Brides. I'm gutted the shop has closed and wish Mr and Mrs Gearing all the best.

I bought a dress at the shop and found everyone really nice and extra helpful, evident in them still trying to get the dresses to people. I am disappointed at it closing down, but wish everyone all the best.
By the way, this is so not newsworthy in comparison to whats happening in the world. Shame on you echo...

Strange how the Echo missed out the fact that Miss Rogers brought two "friends" along to the shop Saturday who were really abusive, shouting and threatening to punch staff. No, I do not work there, I was there as my daughter was getting her prom dress, and I wouldn't want to work there, as I don't think I could have stood and taken the abuse the way the staff did. One of the girls was in tears after the police left with Rogers and her charming friends. I felt for them. It must be bad enough losing your business and having to borrow money to fulfil orders, without getting that sort of abuse on top. Miss Rogers should be ashamed of herself for behaving like a fishwife and taking up front page space in the local rag. I wonder if she will call the echo for a front page spread if and when her dress does come in?

I brought my wedding dress from Wedding day belles and I could not have ask for more friendly staff they were so helpful and made me feel so special about my day. I think that Ms Rogers and her friends should be very ashamed of themselfs to act in such a way. As they are really lovely people in the shop and dont deserve to have that happen to them or them things said about them. I think Miss Rogers was just trying to make more money for herself by going to the papers as she Probably don't work.
I would just like to thank Mr & Mrs Greaing for all they did for me and to wish them all the best in the future.

I feel so sorry for the people who have ordered their wedding dress and now have to face the worry of not getting it in time but I am not surprised in the slightest... I am getting married next year and when I started looking for my wedding dress and bridemaid dresses, everytime I looked in wedding day belles, there was no-one in there, needless to say, I went in and had a look around. After looking through the dresses for a good 10 mins or so, not 1 person bothered to come and ask if I required any help and when I did ask for their assistance, it seemed like I was being a nuisance to bother them. I didn't feel they wanted my custom and they came across slightly rude, if they are like this to other brides-to-be then it's no wonder the place shut down.
