Burglar admits stealing from friend
A BURGLAR caught red-handed as he raided a friend's home was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.
Unemployed Craig Bird, 23, broke into the house in Denver Drive, Basildon, and was searching for valuables when the owner returned.
When Bird, of Riverview Close, Laindon, was arrested, he admitted the burglary and confessed to burgling the shop at Barleylands Farm, Billericay.
Bird, who has a catalogue of previous convictions, also owned up to stealing clothes and valuables worth £250 from a friend, a Ford Focus from a woman he knew, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.
Judge Michael Brooke QC also sentenced Bird to ten months in prison, suspended for 18-months and ordered him to complete the Think First probation programme.
