A CLUB for people who have suffered strokes has raised £2,000 for Southend Hospital's StrokeBusters Appeal.

Castle Point and District Stroke Club raised the money with a variety of activities, such as collecting pennies in jars and holding a quiz night.

The club presented the money to Southend Hospital's lead stroke consultant, Tony O'Brien, at the club's annual lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff.

Geoffrey Sharp, club chairman, who had a stroke ten years ago, said: "For the type of club we are, with most of us having had a stroke and unable do a lot, it was a good amount.

"We're going to continue raising money and from now on all the money we raise will be split between the Stroke Association, StrokeBusters and a fund to buy a minibus to help our members who are in wheelchairs and cannot get about.

"The club is so important for our people because for some it is the only time they can get out and mix with other people, but we do need help running it."

The club meets every other Wednesday. The next meeting is on May 21, from 2pm to 4pm at the Runnymede Hall, in Kiln Road, Thundersley.

New members are welcome. If you would like to join, help out at the meetings or donate to club funds, call 01268 780701.
