FIVE places in Essex have been named as among the top 50 most desirable spots to live in the UK.
Brentwood was ranked fifth in the Halifax’s Quality of Life survey. Uttlesford came in at 18th, Rochford 24th, Colchester 28th and Maldon at 44th.
The top spot was secured by Hart, in Hampshire.
The annual report looked at jobs, the housing market, education, health and crime, as well as the weather, traffic flows and broadband access.
Gareth Jacob, sales director at developer Linden Homes Eastern, said: “Colchester has always been a much sought-after place to live as it blends its rich heritage with a host of exceptional modern facilities.”

My apologies, I was referring to the fact that both 2 & 3 PARA are based at Colchester Garrison, forming part of 16 Air Assault Bde, along with numerous units including 7 RHA - thus I would suggest the largest concentration of Parachute Regt personnel is in Colchester

Should I be surprised that Gareth Jacobs (apparently some random expert selected to make a comment) compliments 'excellent modern facilities'? Particularly as the company he is a director of probably wants to create more of these such items.
I will suggest, however, that the more of the traditional rich heritage that is knocked down to allow for the modern guff, the lower down the survey we will fall.
The change in the last 25 years has, on the whole, been backward steps in town planning when heritage is concerned.
There seems a drive towards food establishments occupying 80% of shops(the rest being empty), housing estates occupying any patch of open land and retaining the aforementioned heritage of remaining buildings a low desire.
We are in danger (in fact, quite a way towards it already) in becoming one of the many identikit high streets with zero personality.

I recently moved back to the area after several years away and find Southend a real let down, traffic hold ups and huge parking fees where ever you go. Our Victorian Pier is a mess too with its modern entrance, who ever did this and town planners should be sacked.
Maybe they meant these were the 50 least undesirable places to live in the UK.
A few years ago, I remember that Southend came out as (allegedly) the best place to retire to in the UK, with good transport links, shopping facilities & a low crime rate cited as reasons for this. Somehow, I feel that the result would be very different now, with the drug related gang violence, "random" street assualts & general running down of all facilities & amenities within the borough.

All the pubs are full of the locals that have been living in the villiage for hundreds of years.
Not BASILDON and why it is the best place to live crime is at zero too. Oh I was thinking of BASILDON in BERKSHIRE so sorry about that
