A jogger has helped stopped a girl from being robbed on Canvey.

At around 4.30pm on Tuesday, October 17, a cyclist approached a girl from behind in Somnes Avenue and grabbed her bag.

The bag then fell to the floor and the suspect pushed the victim over as she bent down to pick it up.

A jogger who noticed the incident came over and grabbed the bag and was then in a struggle with the suspect, who rode off empty handed.

Police believe the suspect was seen cycling close to Benfleet train station before the incident and was wearing a bandanna and hooded top.

Investigating officer Dc Samuel Sheehan, of Basildon CID, said: “We are keen to speak to witnesses who saw this incident, especially a jogger who bravely came to the girl’s aid and stopped the suspect leaving with her bag.

“We are making good progress with the case and are continuing to support the victim who was left shaken by the ordeal.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Basildon CID on 101 quoting incident 003 of 16/11 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
