BOY racers blocked off a notorious Canvey road to conduct late night street racing.

Essex Police received two reports of cars racing in Roscommon Way on Friday night, with the cars involved blocking off the road to create a race track.

Police attended dispersing the vehicles, as well as issuing a Prohibition Notice because the vehicle, a white Ford Fiesta, was in a dangerous condition.

The incident comes just weeks after police were called on Friday and Saturday night to reports of racing on the same stretch of road over the New Year’s weekend.

At the time, Castle Point Councillor for Canvey West, Ray Howard, admitted he hoped it would be a one off, after racing incidents plagued Roscommon Way last summer, but had appeared to ease off.

Mr Howard praised the police reaction.

He said: “I did not receive any of the normal complaints I receive when we have issues, so police must have been there quickly, and it is pleasing to hear it was shut down and action taken.

“We are continuing to work on this issue, which had really quietened down, and police have had a number of successful prosecutions and there are more prosecutions pending.”

The veteran councillor believes an eventual conclusion to the Roscommon Way debacle which has seen the road remain unfinished would resolve the issue.

He added: “Once Roscommon Way is finished it won’t be an issue.

“That is my vision, once the road is completed it will be in constant use by hundreds of drivers, then they will not physically be able to race.

“We are continuing to work on that, and we are hopeful that we can secure the route shortly.”

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed they received two reports of vehicle racing.

They said: “Two incidents were reported 12/01/18 of vehicle racing in Roscommon Way Canvey.

“The attendees blocked the road off to race.

“Officers from the Community Policing Team and Chigwell Road Policing Unit attended.

“Officers dispersed the vehicles and one driver received a Prohibition Notice for the vehicle (pictured) being in a dangerous condition.”
