Rats? Don’t come to us, says council

PEST control is being axed by Thurrock Council.

From next month, residents will have to fork out to clear wasp nests, infestations of rats, mice, brown tail moths, lice, cockroaches, fleas and bed bugs.

The council expects to save £80,000 a year by chopping the service.

Council spokesman Andy Lever said: "Many local authorities have ceased these services and have directed residents to private sector pest control services. This is Thurrock Council's intention."

News of the cut has angered many residents.

A man, in his sixties, from Grays, who who asked not to be named, said: "It's obvious the council is keen on a clean environment, but surely this will have a detrimental effect.

"What are the council officers going to do when they have a problem on their premises? Are council tenants going to have to pay for Rentokil to come round? It's not on."

Yash Gupta, a Labour councillor for Grays, raised concerns over the welfare of the elderly and vulnerable.

He said: "Pest control is the kind of service people expect their local council to provide. So what do Tory Councillors do? Stop providing it.

"So from April, if you've a problem with wasps, rats, flees or cockroaches you'll have to make you own arrangements even if you're vulnerable or elderly.

"It's those members of society I am worried about."

I don't even live under Thurrock Council but this is poor! More council tax being paid and yet again less ammenities, Rats, mice are more rife than ever lets see how long before they reinstate Pest control or they call in the pied piper!!!

What is it with anything rubbish-related in this country?

Councils giving garden bins to people with no gardens...operating spy schemes to see if you throw out the wrong kind of rubbish... bin men who only collect your bins if they match strict criteria on positioning, bag content, colour of bag etc..... bi-weekly collections...

Years ago, you got your bins collected every week, end of story. No spies, no overpaid council officials penalising people.

But now this.

What next, the streets overrun by rats and mice and other vermin, just because this council divests itself of yet another responsibility.

There is no accountability any more because the demarcations between what constitutes a council, or local government department or quango, have become indistinct.

This country is governed by a network of jobs-for-the-boys, inter-related and inbred cronies.

Unfortunately this is also what is happening in the private sector.

People with common sense, genuinely good ideas and a REAL finger on the pulse are sidelined in favour of brown nosers and get rich quick merchants.

I'm afraid the rot started at the top and is slowly creeping its way down.

The state of our refuse and rubbish is now beginning to resemble the state of our country.

Over-run, badly managed - and with a blame culture aimed at the most vulnerable members of society.

I blame the Travellers. And the lefties.

But I won't be coming back to read your witterings, I've got other people to insult, and other lies to tell.

Now run along.

If someone broke my window should I expect the Council to pay for the repair?

If I had rats mice or fleas in my home should I expect the tax payer to deal with it?

What's the English Democrats' policy on solving this problem?

I think everyone’s forgetting the rats human rights. They have the right to live somewhere as much as anyone else. They get tired of constantly moving on. Besides, it's nice to see them scurrying around and playing at night. The way they clean up after us is good for the environment.

One of the other candidates standing in Rayleigh is standing on this and other issues.

We feel it wholly unacceptable that householders are penalised in this way and if any of us is elected, then obviously decisions like this will be voted against.

Policies usually cover much larger things, like education, health, immigration and suchlike.

You really need to understand the differences between local and national politics.

However check out www.englishdemocrats
.org.uk for details of policies.

About time, too. I am completely fed up with exterminated by left-wing do-gooding rat-catchers. I want to be exterminated by privatised rodent population reduction operatives.

Cheers Billy,

I have only had a quick glance , but it looks a lot better than the English dems.

The views are clearly stated and backed up views and facts.

The English dems site was just a load of fluff " government of the people, by the people...." it doesn't say what they really believe in and what they are going to do about it.

I checked the website out too. Interesting to see it peddling the same old lies about Jews controlling the media through their shadowy conspiracies - and a direct link to the Stormfront website.

These "people" are sick, twisted and evil. They deserve no place in our society. Given the choice, I'd take the EDP any day.

"What next, the streets overrun by rats and mice and other vermin, just because this council divests itself of yet another responsibility."

The Local Authority actually has no responsibility for the control of rats and mice other than on its own land (See prevention of damage by pests act 1949 for more). The responsibility lands squarely with the owner/occupier of a premises.

What a lot of authorities have done is to continue the service but to charge at a subsidised rate for some visits. Basildon doesn't charge at all if i'm corect and southend charges for some and not others. I don't think That there is a right or wrong way to go about it, but I take on board the points about vulnerable groups such as the elderly and I'd be annoyed if I had to shell out a fortune for private pest control.
