HUNDREDS of householders were left without power after a sub-station caught fire in Thames Drive, Leigh.

The fire last night cut supplies to homes in an area which included parts of Leigh Broadway, Marine Parade and Thames Drive. Many were still without power this morning.

Firefighters from Hadleigh and Leigh were called to the incident around 8pm and discovered cabling on fire.

Essex Fire and Rescue is not treating the fire as suspicious and suspect recent maintenance work may be to blame.

there was a click and all the electrics stopped,my husband and son fiddled in the cupboard and muttered a lot so I went outside and found that many of the neighbours were wandering about looking lost.
It was only a power cut but the deathly silence was amazing, and people were talking to each other which was strange. As it got darker we got out candles ,that was nice as I looked much younger by candlelight !
What to talk about though....hhmm.the dogs were delighted to be played with as the light was too low to read by so we played and laughed for most of the evening, chatted to neighbours we had never seen and had a relaxing time, my only worry was for our chameleon who was getting a bit cold....then suddenly all the lights came on and the telly started up and the dogs went to sleep,we stopped chatting and laughing ,the chameleon sunbathed and we watched a programme....and the neighbours went in...back to normal......shame really.
