Airport slow on security move

How interesting to see Southend Airport has a plan to improve security at the new terminal.

Soon after the car-bomb attack in June, 2007, at Glasgow Airport, measures were put in place to prevent such attacks at all major airports. Southend has taken almost three years to react.

Your article (Jan 27) demonstrated the confidence felt by airport owners that expansion will go ahead, but fails to mention the anticipated rise in oil prices that will follow the decline of oil production, which could affect the number of planes able to fly from any airport, least of all from a small one like Southend.

Ted Lewin’s proposal to end night flights, made at the developmental control committee, sent councillors and advisers looking for answers from one another. The only answer given was that it would cost the airport money!

Running services all night costs money.

Employing a night security staff would cost less in monetary terms, and would mean thousands of people could sleep all night without interruption.

Finally, will someone explain the “potential investment from the Olympics” mentioned by MP James Duddridge.

Olympians and supporters know London City Airport is nearer the Olympic site, and will spend their money in London. How does that benefit Southend?

More SAEN drivel.

Let Stobart worry about how to run the airport efficiently and safely (with a lovely longer runway) and find something else to sing about.

so is Southend a major airport that should have implemented security measures 3 years ago or a small one that should worry about the future cost of oil?

If you honestly can't see how The Olympics can help attract passengers (once the lovely runway is built and Airlines decide to use it) then you need to go to Specsavers. I doubt Southend will be competing with London City for the Olympic games passengers but it will be certainly better to fly to than flying to Norwich, Southampton, Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, Newquay Etc Etc Etc to get to Stratford.

This is another example of SAEN's muddled thinking. Does Mrs Theobald consider Southend to already be a "major airport"? It seems like it by her criticism of the "delay" in deciding the security measures needed. SAEN certainly don't ever give that impression in their propaganda - instead they try to make out that Southend is some sleepy backwater minor airfield at present which is about to change dramatically into another Stansted. The truth, of course, is that the airport is currently a busy local airport catering for large numbers of private, business and training flights plus having one of the largest maintenance activities in the country. The only change will be that modern medium-size passenger aircraft will be added to the mix to enable the airport to offer a range of destinations that the vast majority of people will want to benefit from, with an attendant increase in employment at the airport.
On the matter of City airport and the Olympics, there is no question of that airport being able to cater for anything more than a small percentage of the total numbers flying in for the Games. Airports as far away as Bournemouth are certainly expecting to meet some of that demand and Southend will be far better placed to do so.
As a footnote, shouldn't Mrs Theobald have mentioned her leadership role with SAEN in her address details to put her views in context?

What a load of codswallop the original letter writer comes out with! No wonder no one takes her SAEN group seriously if this is the clarity of thought they bring to bare on the matter. Norfolk has it spot on, (as usual!), nothing to add, except perhaps should move on to something new - perhaps even take up folk singing?

"perhaps even take up folk singing?"

Not without a Public inquiry first!

Is this Lady Theobold an educated woman or just plain ignorant, or a total lover of stirring up the S**t. All Stobart have ever said is that it's a good way to start their first year after the runway extension with charter flights looking for runway spaces during the Olympics Games. If impressed, those airlines and passengers hopefully will return as regular customers. That is a common sense concept for any new business. So kindly shut up please.
