Airport’s problem is not unique

I have been amazed to find the Stobart Group appears to be having similar problems at Southend Airport to those here in Carlisle.

There’s considerable opposition to both developments, and a broad understanding among the public that these developments are more about Stobart developing its freight services than the airports. The other similarity is that both councils are Conservative-led, and both sets of councillors seem hell bent on ignoring their electorate.

Andrew Tinkler, Stobart chief executive officer, would have those of us who oppose his plans for Carlisle believe we are alone. It’s nice to know this isn’t true.

Carlisle Airport is in green belt land and has part of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site passing through its northern edge.

Yet this hasn’t stopped our Conservative councilors giving the group carte blanche to build an HQ at Carlisle.

We are also subjected to partisan comments in support of Stobart’s plans for world domination.

At one point, a Canadian company said it wouldn’t locate a plant in Cumbria unless the council approved plans for Carlisle Airport.

The company turned out to have two employees and hasn’t been heard of since.

Has it offered to build anything in Southend yet?

Has Malcom ever Seen Southend Airport? He is talking out of his hat if he thinks Stobart can make it a viable Freight hub either now with a small runway or later with a longer runway but severe Freight restrictions written into the Planning consent. (and the longer runway still isn't viable for Freight)
as for
"There’s considerable opposition to both developments, and a broad understanding among the public that these developments are more about Stobart developing its freight services than the airports. "

Can he provide some proof to the "considerable opposition" in Southend please.

I'd say that a 75% objection rate to both phases of JAAP consultation and the planning application consultation is pretty good evidence of "considerable opposition".

hey i think stobarts are only buying airports which home vulcan bombers.
What people dont realise is that carlise airport has ground contamination issues which i found out only two well when digging in with 2 para in the 90's for a joint americain and british exercise so nothing other than an airport there is realistic. Southend Airport is a completely diffrent venture and much more viable as a passanger airport than freight and their own induced restrictions on freight and night flights should show their willing.
A fantastic British company with a good reputation for standards and methods i really cant see what the issue with stobarts and people saying that they are lying about their intentions. Bring on the airport for 2012

I really wonder what planet you are on Denis? 75% of less than 1% of the population of the area is not considerable opposition. It just demonstrates a noisy few that could be bothered to object.

Denis is a personal friend of the planet Earth (of course we cant ask the earth if it wants him as a mate) yes that 1% was peter walker, Mrs walker, and a very few others who dont actually live anywhere near the flight path (they live in prittlewell a few streets from me) have we an issue in this area of the southend district from the airport? NO
Has SEEFoE got an issue with southend council and any development plans anywhere in the local area? YES This small group of people led by a Grammer schooled idiot who lies daily to try and win and argument i mean have you seen his pictures on PPPS website where he posts pictures of priory cresent (my road) with no traffic visable and a caption of a typical afternoon. Man or child as i would like to call him comes on here with his father peter under so many diffrent names trying to generate an impression that southend is doomed and unhappy about the airport and priory cresent. I cant wait for his face and press release when Stobarts win its guarenteed as Southend is in the plan for public transport for 2012 and i cant see any goverment minister stopping the plan being actioned late and missing this deadline.
