A13 bus lanes are a waste of our money

8:52pm Saturday 4th September 2010

Whose idea was it to turn the stretch of the A13 London Road from Kents Hill Junction to Tarpots from two lanes to three, to include a bus lane?

I thought the idea of these road “improvements” was to improve traffic flow, not to bring it to a halt!

I cannot begin to imagine the problems this is going to cause, not least for the emergency services and traffic joining from the side roads.

If the powers that be think this is going to force car users on to buses then they are very wrong.

However, I can never see anyone admitting this was all a big mistake and returning the road to its original condition.

After all, people are going to be riding bikes around Hadleigh Castle for two days in 2012, so the buses must be given priority.

The wrong solution for the wrong reason and a complete waste of money.

...Chris Russell accurately contrasts the appalling state of our local roads with those in other parts of the country (Aug 19).

We, too, have just returned from a week in North Yorkshire, where it actually took me a day or two to realise there were no speed cameras, barely any humps (only on rare occasions near a school) and as he says, no inaccurate “slow down” flashing signs.

Driving all of a sudden had become a pleasure again, rather than a frustrating revenue-raiser.

Despite the proliferation of speed cameras in Essex, the revenue raised here certainly isn’t going on resurfacing.

It is now many months since the heavy winter snow, which was blamed for the outburst of potholes.

I nominate Scrub Lane and the junction with New Road, Hadleigh, as contenders for Mr Russell’s “worst in the area”, because here the totally superfluous speed humps are in an awful condition, yet Castle Point Council does nothing about it.

The motorist in Essex is being taken for a small fortune every year. At the very least, the vast majority of us who do drive safely and well should be rewarded with a decent surface.
