With a fanfare of trumpets just over a year ago, smaller businesses were being told via the press that “the local Olympic sites will bring much needed work to local businesses,”
and that “local Olympic sites will provide work for local smaller businesses.”
I represent a local utilities company here in Southend and have attended all local Olympic meetings, the last one being at Seevic, Thundersley, just over a month ago, and I have not even heard a whisper then or since of any works on said sites being placed among the local business sector.
Has anyone else had a sniff of all this Olympic work that is going to be dished out locally?
Small businesses here in Southend have not a clue as to where or who is shoving out this work.
There is soon to be major Olympic works in Southend and Basildon, so where is this mythical beast called “tendering for local Olympic infrastructure works”?
At the meeting at Seevic, businesses which attended were not even allowed to ask questions.
Loads of chat on “apprentice schemes” that councillors wanted small businesses to subscribe to and underwrite. Tons of chat on “thousands of local volunteers wanted,” but local companies being talked to re tendering?
The silence is not only deafening, it’s infuriating.
This event is less than two years away now, works have started at Hadleigh park, but it’s still...sssshhh...don’t ask.
