My stand on Nelson Hotel

I’d like to clarify my position regarding your story Nelson Hotel Might Be Turned Into Flats (Jan 31).

From the comments it might have seemed as if I fully support the conversion of the Westcliff pub to flats, which I certainly do not.

The most important thing to me is the facade is protected and not damaged as it is an important part of local history and should be recognised as such.

There is a big pressure on parking in that area already, hence the petition I submitted to the council. If the car parking currently at the back of the pub is lost then I can’t support the plan.

Parking is a huge issue in that area and with the new health centre, this conversion and a request for a building, at the other end of North road, to be converted into houses of multiple occupancy it is only likely to get worse.

I hope when the traffic and working party consider the petition they grant the residents’ overwhelming desire for some form of traffic management scheme.
