WITH Britain going to the polls tomorrow to decide whether the country should remain part of the European Union, many Echo readers feel like history is repeating itself.
A referendum last took place in Britain 41 years ago, when residents were asked to decide whether they wanted the country to stay in the Common Market, which later became the EU.
The country had joined in 1973, two years before the vote.
While some were optimistic as to the benefits of the Common Market, others fought furiously to leave.
The Echo has taken a trip down memory lane to look back at the 1970s, and what it meant to our readers.
Many fishermen were opposed to the Common Market while others were excited at the prospect of joining together with the rest of Europe.
