A SLIPWAY used to launch dinghies is in disrepair and could lead to an accident, Leigh Port Partnership chairman Mike King has warned.

Mr King said the slipway on Two Tree Island, Leigh, was full of potholes which could cause people to lose their footing, especially when the tide was in.

He said: "It's got huge potholes in it which are quite dangerous. If you're walking along on it and you can't see what you're walking on, you suddenly find one foot has gone down further than you expected."

Leigh Lib Dem councillor Alan Crystall said the problem had developed as there was no longer a forseshore officer on the island to collect launching fees.

He said: "When people come in motor boats they should pay launching fees and it should pay for itself. Then there would be the income to fix it. But it's been allowed to go into decline.

"The council is losing money and nothing's being done about it. It's a poor stewardship of resources."

THE TRUTH, says...

This is only part of the equation. Half way down the slipway is covered with up to 9" of mud - very nice for kids and wives etc. Needs cleaning asap.

Also, the lack of supervision is causing safety problems. Many if not most of the fast motor boat crowd, ie the jetskiers, speedboaters etc, have no idea about marine safety or etiquette and they roar off through the moored boats causing all sorts of problems. Mark my words. One day soon there will be an accident - a collision with other boats, swimmers etc - possibly leading to loss of life unless these cowboys are reined in.

Please please bring back supervision, and charge these people for using the slip so the rest of us mooring payers do not have to pay even more for the supervision. These moorings are already well overpriced even compared to the reputedly more expensive south coast.
