PUPILS have been encouraged to speak out at a Wickford school.

Year 10 pupils from Bromfords School were given advice on how to express themselves clearly to an audience, by a public speaking trainer.

They were being prepared to take part in the Jack Petchey Foundation Speak Out Challenge.

Chris Perry, spokeswoman for the school, said: "The idea was to give students who took part confidence to speak out in public, on issues they care about."

Up to 23,500 Year 10 pupils, from every state secondary school in London and Essex, are taking part in the Speak Out Challenge.

The 110 best public speakers will be given iPods and the overall winner will win a holiday and £3,000 for their school.
