A MUM has told of her agonising wait after her 20-month-old-baby was wrongly given a second Measles Mumps and Rubella jab.

Sarah Lewis, 23, is furious at the Neera Medical Centre, on Wharf Road, Stanford-le-Hope, who gave her son Samuel another dose of the combined vaccine - even though he didn't need another one until he is three or four.

Miss Lewis was further angered when the surgery tried to tell her this was the first time her son had been given the MMR jab, despite the first vaccine being signed for back in September on the baby's health folder.

The centre maintained it had done nothing wrong, but then relented and said Miss Lewis would receive an apology in the post.

Miss Lewis of St Margaret's Avenue, Stanford, said: "It's been two weeks and I still haven't heard anything. Not to say sorry is an insult."

Miss Lewis took her son to the surgery after getting a call informing her the nurse had forgotten to give him his pneumococcal conjugate vaccine at 12-months-old when he had his MMR jab.

Dr A M Deshpande administered the PCV jab. Miss Lewis was comforting her crying baby when he said her son was due another injection. As she was focused on Samuel she did not ask the doctor what it was for.

When she got home Miss Lewis checked the baby's health card and discovered that he had been given a second MMR jab.

Ruth Osbourne, a South West Essex PCT spokesman, said: "This incident must have been very worrying for Miss Lewis. Samuel will not have suffered any harm as a result of receiving the second vaccination.

"The GP is writing to Miss Lewis to apologise. Miss Lewis has now raised a formal complaint with the practice.

"PCT staff will work with staff there to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure mistakes like this cannot be repeated."
