THE RED carpet will be rolled out on Canvey next month when the island gets a royal visitor.
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, said he wanted to visit Canvey since he attended a ceremony in Chelmsford commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1953 floods.
Now a trip has been arranged for Friday, June 13 when the Prince will tour Canvey to get a flavour of island life past and present.
His interest in Canvey, which began at the ceremony in Chelmsford Cathedral in January 2003, happened almost by chance.
The Queen was due to attend the memorial service for the 58 people who died in the floods, but after hurting her foot was forced to pull out and sent her youngest son instead.
Lorraine King, of the Essex Lord Lieutenant's office, who organised the visit said: "He said at the time, one day I will come and visit Canvey and June 13 is that day."

Canvey councillor Ray Howard spoke at the Chelmsford memorial service of his memories of the flood when he was an 11-year-old boy. He said: "Prince Edward showed a considerable interest in Canvey and I am delighted he is coming to visit."
The Prince will look at some of the island's sea defences including the Benfleet flood barrier, Ferry Road, and visit TEC Marine Mouldings in Smallgains Marina, to see boats being built.
He will also call in on pupils at Canvey Junior School, stop for lunch at The Labworth Restaurant, Eastern Esplanade, and pay a visit to the Dutch Cottage Museum, on Benfleet Road.
Museum secretary Geoff Johnson said: "I have heard he is quite tall so he had better not stand up straight or he will bang his head on the ceiling."
Members of the public will get a chance to greet the Prince on his journey around the island, but for security reasons the exact details of his route will not be released until nearer the time.

Well I feel sure the prince will be most welcome to visit the island. Will he be sitting in the traffic like the rest of us waiting to get on the island?
Do you remember Edward and other royals in ITS A KNOCKOUT ON T.V. some years ago? Is this going to be a new game show? How fast can you get around the Waterside roundabout? Im sure Edward will use his camera to take a photo of the view from the flood gates in Ferry Road. Oh Edward I dont think we will ever see you again.

I noticed the council have taken good care of cutting the grass verges on Canvey Road. Can the prince visit more often so we can keep the roads onto Canvey looking tidy?

I see Edward get out of his car to go into the Labworth, and he waved to me (I waved back) I was out walking my dog, he may have noticed my dog rather than me! lol
