A FORMER department store, now partly used as a charity shop, has been bought by developers to be turned into offices.
The Samuels Partnership, run by Ivor and David Samuels, has acquired the former Brightwells department store building, opposite the Royals and next to the Royal Hotel in Southend High Street.
The brothers, who were responsible for the refurrbishment 20 years ago of the Westcliff Hotel, plan to convert the empty building into offices and spruce up the outside.

David Samuels said: "It is an attractive building which lots of people know in Southend.
"We have applied for planning permission to convert the top three floors of the building, which were a gymnasium, into offices.
"There is an existing permission for residential property use, but we have identified a need for offices in the town centre.
"We believe the building was designed more for offices than homes. Having people working in the town centre adds to its vitality."
He added the outside of the building would also gain a facelift as it was looking run-down. The ground floor of the building is currently a YMCA charity shop.

It is good that something is going to be done with this beautiful building at last, but such a shame it is going to be offices as it would make a wonderful arts centre or new home for the Focus Gallery.
