Quake appeal by Chinese community

MEMBERS of south Essex's Chinese community are hoping to raise money to help victims of the massive earthquake which devastated south-west China.

Tony Law, chairman of the Southend-based South-East Essex Chinese Association, said he was hoping to launch an appeal later this week after discussing the issue with other members.

He said: "In cases like this we normally do appeal to our members and the community. They will no doubt put in efforts and donate some money."

Mr Law said if people want to help straight away, they can call his mobile on 07802 571616 or the Red Cross on 0844 8711111.

I can appreciate that people want to help in some way, but is money needed ?
I was under the impression that money is not in short supply in China ?

Perhaps Mr Law should visit the Westcliff Casino any night of the week. There seems to be loads of money being spent on the tables by the Chinese people in the area. Very sad for the victims and families, but with the UK economy in such a poor state, we need to consider charity beginning at home. Even the Polish are going home for health treatment as ours is so poor!

Isn't China one of the new superpowers? They seem to be taking the world by storm with their export industry on textiles and electronics. Where is the money from that?
