A MIDSUMMER open event gave new and returning students at Thurrock and Basildon College a treat.

The Fit 4 Learning event, on the lawn at the the college's Woodview site, in Grays, featured a marquee, activities and a barbecue. Inside the marquee were demonstrations of floristry by second year students and an opportunity to get made up by the beauty department.

Outside, sports activities included a Beat the Goalie competition, while Army demonstrations and displays proved popular with visitors.

Students could also try firing a paintball gun and get a feel for the kind of heavy equipment soldiers carry on desert patrol - something which bought home the need for soldiers to be fit.
