"Southend Pier 'cultural centre' is boringly named"

The pier's cultural centre The pier's cultural centre

SOUTHEND Pier’s new £3million cultural centre is too boringly named to attract any visitors.

That’s the verdict of Anna Waite, the former Tory leader of Southend Council, who has called for it to be rechristened to draw more people to the end of the pier.

The authority has said it is willing to listen to any offers to use the cultural centre, which has already hosted art exhibitions, musical performances, comedy gigs and private events since it opened in July.

But Mrs Waite questioned why it had been given such an uninspiring name in the first place.

She said: “Let’s face it, how many children or teenagers, or even any visitors, are going to get excited about visiting a ‘cultural centre’?

“Would you hold your wedding or celebrate an important birthday in a ‘cultural centre’?”

“Even our diehard locals are sceptical.”

Derek Jarvis, the Tory councillor responsible for culture, said the new building’s title could be changed in the future.

However, he argued the current moniker was not damaging its attractiveness in any way.

“It is a working title in a sense and I’m sure that, in the future, we can have a debate about what it should be called,” he said.

“But one thing is certain: it is not hindering business at all.

“We have had a lot of interest in the centre and it has been a great success so far.”

We went to the centre last night for a showing of Monster Humanoids from the Deep. Everyone there had a right good time and i will be looking out for more events.
Agree it is boringly named though. Perhaps it should be called the Phoenix For the amount of times it has come back from the ashes up that end of the pier.

Whatever happened to the idea of the enormous seafront statue of Lee Brilleaux? If that's not going to happen and the airport isn't going to be named after him then I suppose the cultural wotsit would do. I suppose something posh like the Dame Helen Mirren Centre wouldn't go amiss either.

Just not The Waiting Room please, I don't want to be reminded of HER forever more!

As if renaming it will persuade more people to traipse over mile out to sea. If they really want more people to visit I suggest they move it a mile or so further north.

As much I despise Waite, she does have a point. Not only is this the wrong type of building in the wrong place. A building named "cultural" or "arts" centre only promotes snobbery and the ordinary person in the street will be less inspired to visit if it were on land, let alone over a mile out at sea.

"The pier used to be packed" ... with things that were appropriate for the end of a very long pier. The word appropriate used to be top of the list on the "hierarchies of importance" of architects, planners, designers etc. Sadly these days it is fashionable to reject such sensible principles - especially amongst people who are not fully trained architects, planners, designers etc - which is why we have a tin box on the end of the pier and we'll be getting a museum for the quiet contemplation of the Prince of Prittlewell right in the middle of Southends primary chav magnet. I give up.
