I fully agree that it shouldn't be a politician running the police. However, following Hillsborough I not sure a "police professional" would be appropriate either.

Who are the other candidates?are they all politically sponsored?

According to the media the majority of police forces do not want a police commissioner as it is thought to be unnessessary. The police are undermanned and under paid and yet money can be found for this post.
As it appears that a commissioner will be elected want it or not my dilemma is do we not vote at all or vote for someone other that Mick Thwaites, an ex police officer as this would be most inappropiate. Voting for an ex police officer
is rather like voting for an old boys club.

It would be best if no-one votes for any candidate. Politicising the police is a very bad idea.

Politicians running the Police feels me with horror and the majority of friends I know have no faith in politicians WHATSOEVER !!

An independent is the only choice if he was old bill all the better at least he knows about what being old bill is all about and will not be bullshitted by senior PoliceMan.

Further more a Policeman that has served 30 yrs being honest without fiddling their bloody expenses speak volumes to me!!!

Surely we had representation through our county councillors. This will give one political party the ability to control the police in their county/region rather than a mix of political views on the police authorities. The only solution is to spoil your ballot paper and register your protest.

Next step, let us vote for local judges.

Police and Crime Commissioner elections will be held in Essex on 15 November 2012; the candidates standing at that election, alphabetically by surname, are:

ALSTON. Nick (The Conservative Party Candidate)
BELGROVE, Linda (Independent)
MORRIS-COOK, Val (The Labour Party Candidate)
SMITH, Andrew (UK Independence Party)
THWAITES, Mick (Independent)
TILBROOK, Robin (English Democrats - "More Police - Catching Criminals!")

PCCs will be required to swear an oath of impartiality when they are elected to office. The swearing of an oath will be an important symbol of impartiality, emphasising both the significance of this new role in local communities and that PCCs are there to serve the people, not a political party or any one section of their electorate.

It is not possible for politicians to be free to vote when their party will stop backing them unless they follow the party line.
A good example is Bob Spink thrown out by back stabbing party members.

"In short, I know policing. I served in three police forces – City of London, Metropolitan and Essex. In 2000, I was appointed Divisional Commander Southend on Sea and in 2002 Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Essex Police. My last role before retiring in March 2009, at the rank of Chief Superintendent, was as the senior officer representing Essex Police with regard to the 2012 Olympics. I was also Head of Roads Policing for Essex Police".

This is taken from Mick Twaites's web site, I have been to one of his meetings and I shall be voting for him.

So he is an ex-policeman. Surely not impartial?

So in the nine years he was involved at the top end of policing in Essex, ask yourself are happy with the police over that period.
