A FORMER Southend woman is bracing herself as 1,000-mile wide Hurricane Sandy hits her new home in America.

Nicci Hartland, whose family still lives in Southend, is taking refuge in her third floor flat in Newark, New Jersey, as 85mph winds and 11ft waves bash America’s East Coast.

Nicci said: “I’m pretty nervous because I’ve been in three or four of these storms before but they normally just head up the coast. This one is heading straight for us.

“We know we are going to have a lot more damage and flooding.”

The former Eastwood School pupil, who moved to the States 17 years ago, said the wind and rain had been “relentless” for the past 24 hours, people had stocked up on non-perishable food and only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads.

I lived in Rhode Island USA for the past 6 years now, I'm originally from Eastwood Essex : ) we got hit with the storm, 86mph gusts and some rain, we got flooding too but no where near as much as New York. But it was a crazy storm and we got through it!

I saw a bit of the Fox News last night/early hours and the anchors seemed very disappointed as reporters and weather experts were saying the worst was now over, flood waters were dropping and winds were not quite so strong. All the anchors wanted to do was try and get as much sensationalism out of it as possible by coming back with "...but it is still dangerous?" or "...but flood waters are still high?" and "....but winds were still strong and damage could still occur?"
It was so laughable as you watched outside reporters and camera people positioning themselves to show the most "dramatic" backdrop they could (a flapping sign or swaying traffic light) when it was so obviously a situation that was getting a lot calmer.

I just pointed out that the Huffington Post is about as far up the food chain as the Sun and the Daily Mail. What makes you think I don't? For online news Huffington is leagues ahead of the Daily Heil, the Sun, even the BBC.

As for broadsheets only two are worth reading these days, the Guardian and the Independent.
