Southend woman braced for 'Frankenstorm' as Hurricane Sandy set to hit USA
6:04pm Monday 29th October 2012 in Local News By David Trayner
East River on the Manhattan side in New York as Hurricane Sandy brings 11ft high storm swell to America's east coast
A FORMER Southend woman is bracing herself as 1,000-mile wide Hurricane Sandy hits her new home in America.
Nicci Hartland, whose family still lives in Southend, is taking refuge in her third floor flat in Newark, New Jersey, as 85mph winds and 11ft waves bash America’s East Coast.
Nicci said: “I’m pretty nervous because I’ve been in three or four of these storms before but they normally just head up the coast. This one is heading straight for us.
“We know we are going to have a lot more damage and flooding.”
The former Eastwood School pupil, who moved to the States 17 years ago, said the wind and rain had been “relentless” for the past 24 hours, people had stocked up on non-perishable food and only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads.

They still haven't cleared up the mess that Katrina made of Louisiana and New Orleans but there's not enough rich, white voters down there to worry about

They live on the 66th floor so they are probably worried about the flood.
Mind you, his Beemer in the basement garage wil probably be a goner.
He's from Rayleigh, Essex - will that do?

I'm please for you LisaCx. By the way, has the Rhode Island Courier any stories in it about car crashes or christmas dinner overdoses in Southend?
Naah, I thought not.
Is Rhode Island Airport noisy by the way? Probably not else we'd had read of it here by now.

It was so laughable as you watched outside reporters and camera people positioning themselves to show the most "dramatic" backdrop they could (a flapping sign or swaying traffic light) when it was so obviously a situation that was getting a lot calmer.

As for broadsheets only two are worth reading these days, the Guardian and the Independent.
I've been reading Private Eye for thirty years.

I think what you really mean is you only read the papers that support your biased ideas. That's not quite the same as wanting to know the truth is it?
.
As for the Huffington, these are from todays front page ... the truth about ouija boards; naked footballers cause outrage; Amy's wedding dress stolen; Corden's pink swimsuit; not to mention special sections for Cheryl Cole, Harry Styles, TOWIE etc etc etc...
.
I rest my case.

It's the only way to see what is happening around the world.
For instance, on Saturday the lead story on BBC TV and Radio news, was about the NY Marathon being cancelled. Real earth shattering news.
