Southend drug centre looks set for go-ahead
3:00pm Monday 12th November 2012 in Local News
County Chambers
CONTROVERSIAL plans to open a drug and alcohol treatment centre in the heart of Southend look set to get the go-ahead.
Planning officers at Southend Council have recommended South Essex Partnership Trust’s bid to use the empty County Chambers building, in Weston Road, as the new base for its Community Drug and Alcohol Service (CDAS) is approved on Wednesday.
The plans to use the former solicitors’ office, just off the High Street, have sparked controversy among traders, campaigners and potential neighbours.
But Andrew Lewis, the council’s corporate director for enterprise, tourism and the environment, said he was happy with the idea.
He said: “The proposed use would provide a health service for which there is a need in this location.
“It would also replace an existing facility which the applicant states is well-used and an essential healthcare service for local residents, and is valuable to the local community in respect of health improvement, crime reduction and safeguarding.”

I am all for helping people to get off addictive substances however that help cannot mean forever and ever otherwise taxpayers will have to foot the bill when the money could be better spent helping those that really do need help when finances are being squandered on what can only be described as a bottomless pit purely for welfare drink and drug dependent lifetime parasites.
And please. Spare me the bleeding hearts club which has many members on this site.

This centre is a good idea. People who are suffering from addiction do need help. Better to help them now than pay the increased cost further down the line.

You're against a single drug treatment centre near the high street but have no problem with a high street surrounded by bars, pubs and clubs that spew out a drunken horde every weekend turning the town into a no-go zone for residents?

Just give them free drugs. It will be cheaper and nature can take its course.

Better to help them now than pay the increased cost further down the line, but you have the draw the line somewhere with the ones who do not take the help that is offered.

The building was used by a large criminal law firm for many years with clients such as thieves, robbers, sex offenders, burglers drugs users, and wife beaters and worse. No one complained then!
Opposite was the offices of Terrence Higgins Trust for AIDS sufferers. . No one complained then.

chaplins lad wrote:I'm not happy about where a lot of my tax goes and I certainly disagree with allowing alcoholics and drug addicts to claim sickness benefits when their 'sickness' is wholly self inflicted but I do recognise that drug addicts need help and the old County Chambers building seems perfect for the job. MrDavid wrote:Sadly the answer which I found out today is Yes, they do get 52 weeks to Recover ?? living free on my taxes, and as for CRI and CDAS, had a check of their sites as well, £25000 starting wage in southend, hardly peanuts, and all funded by southend council, it would seem that the defence people are trying to put up on this site is quite frankly pathetic, the point is, CDAS is best where it stands, at the other end of town, and all you fluffy people on here defending druggies who just freeload off of society, need to have a good look at yourselfs, and ask, if you were paying tax that went on something you didnt want it too, would you be happy ?chaplins lad wrote:"Huge wage bills", "throwing money left right and centre". If my kids or grandkids did end up on drugs, these services dont really fill me with confidence, its time for more residential treatment homes that ensure people get the help needed and if results were not forecoming, stop the free drugs ! CDAS give a free top up fix, and CRI give out a lot of hot air and free needles and spoons to cook up with, the money needs to go to GPs to use the money to gain results, Most of my anger around this subject is that I like my town, and to see these places put in the town centre is not practical, there are better places for them away from shoppers and kids

It's funny reading the hypocrisy from many commenters here. They are outraged at this crime, they want this crime punished, they froth and drool for 'deportation' without any clue as to whether or not the culprits are British, they decry 'do-gooders' who think before speaking, yet tell them you will video them doing something illegal in a cr and suddenly it isn't 'crime', it's the poor persecuted motorist not being allowed to break the law with impunity.
