Police are appealing for witnesses after two knifepoint robberies in Basildon town centre.

The CCTV and efit image shows a man believed both robberies in East Walk, around midnight on Monday, November 5.

The Eastgate Centre opened for customerswho wanted to go to Game store and purchase Halo 4, which was released at midnight.

While people were queuing outside the centre two men caused a disturbance.

Later when people were leaving the store, just after midnight, a 22-year-old man from Billericay was approached by the same two men in East Walk, near the Panasonic shop, threatened him with a knife and stole his Sony Ericsson mobile phone.

Within minutes a 41-year-old woman was walking near Santander and the same two men attempted to rob her of her handbag. She was threatened with the knife but fortunately the fled empty-handed.

Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man shown in CCTV and depicted in the efit to contact Dc Glen Crosby at the Basildon Target Team on 101. Police are also appealing for any witnesses to the initial disturbance to contact them.

Information can also be given anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

GET more coppers out of the cars and they MIGHT prevent a few more crimes like these.

Any politician who actually follows through on making it a mandatory prison sentence for carrying a knife in public will get my vote.

This crime like many other vile crimes will only stop when these cowardly thugs get real good custodial sentences. If they are caught for this then they will be unlucky to get 8 Months but probably community service. BUT if this crime was graded to a minimum tarriff of 7 years these parasites would not do this crime.

Even if that does not stop them from doing that crime it will, at least, take them off the streets for 7 years - during which they cannot commit the crime even if they wanted to.

Rich\Carol, you comment quite a lot about your views on crime. Do you have an opinion on the forthcoming PCC elections? Or does anybody else for that matter? The whole subject seems very low key considering we are expected to vote this week using informed choice.

To get more coppers out of cars, first get them in. With the current reductions in the police force, you will be lucky to have a single copper in Basildon in or out of a car. The only reason for the current reduction in crime is the cold weather. You can't get the thieves to go out at night!

my cousin has just found out that this is the ONLY place in town NOT COVERED BY CCTV!!! i think it is disgusting that there is no cameras there, considering there are bank cash machines in this end of town and also a walkway into a car park as well! Something needs to be done about this

"Sorry, fresh field's to sow, or is it houses to grow.....Well whatever. With £300,000 of consultation club to find for the Ballards walk green field cover up, can't be doing with a few yokels and their piddling knife point robberies. Out of me way!" That was one councillor's view when asked why the security cameras were unmanned in our town!

Bet you can't guess where such expressions as: "A load of balls" or "A right balls up!" Or "I don't know where he got the Balls" Originated from.
My guess is, this is not the first time we've had a councillor Ball in this country!

I cant believe some members of society as i was the woman who had these criminals try to rob me . For the lawbreaker i just want to say this i hope you don't have an elderly relative or a sister , mother or even child that bumps into the scum who did this to me . I hope you realize exactly the effects this type of crime can have on people . To the readers of the Echo and to the Echo itself i would like to state there is no camera's where the crime happened so these criminals will probably get away with it . To the editor of the Echo help the community feel safer by starting a petition for cctv to be installed in this area to help the community have a fighting chance of feeling safer and also catching and bringing these criminals to justice .

hmmm i wonder if the Echo would be able to pass the details of this person onto the police so they can ask him who it is. as he clearly states he thinks he recognises the person, surely that would be enough to go on? and like my cousin said, i hope he don't have someone he knows have this happen to them, because if it did, maybe he wouldn't be so **** quiet then!
