Shoebury heritage centre set to get go-ahead

LONG-AWAITED plans for a heritage centre in Shoebury look set to get the green light.

Planning officers at Southend Council have recommended councillors give the go-ahead to the proposals to convert the former wagon shed on the Garrison estate into an exhibition space for schoolchildren and visitors.

The move, if it is rubber-stamped today, could bring to an end an eight-year wait for the heritage centre, which was part of the original proposals for the redevelopment of the site.

Andrew Lewis, the council’s corporate director for enterprise, tourism and the environment, said: “The building currently sits empty, and it is pleasing to see this application for its retention, re-use and long-term preservation being brought forward.

I've lost all faith in Southend Council's ability to do anything correctly. It takes 8 years to get a heritage centre designed and approved yet less than a month to approve the monstrous eyesore of dumping 80 lorry loads of material a day next to a brand new primary school for the cliff stabilisation project for 2 years!

The new school isn't on the garrison., it's in Gunners Park. At least what used to be Gunners Park before Southend's tories allowed it to be concreted and turned into an industrial estate.

Does it matter where it is?! The school was built on land that is part of the council's Garrison master-plan. It's certainly not an industrial estate, it has a school and office buildings, certainly not the same class use as industry like most other parts of this town!

Take a look at the plans. Everything from Campfield Road to the New Barge Pier road is scheduled to have an industrial estate built on it.

Shoebury has lots of history much of it revolves around the mod site. The building of the new hinguar school is a good step forward. Gunners Park has not been a park for as long as I remember just a patch of grass. It's called progress those in the garrison more concerned about there view being affected. Look forward to visiting the centre when it is complete.

Between Campfield road and new garrison road is a school, 3 blocks of office units, and the future site for an NHS super centre. There are 2 more plots but nothing has been proposed - at one point was a hotel. How is that everything?
