Tory voted first Essex police and crime commissioner
6:40pm Friday 16th November 2012 in Local News
TORY Nick Alston has been voted Essex's first police and crime commissioner following a nail-biting count.
Mr Alston polled 51,325 votes and was in first place, with Independent Mick Thwaites in second place, polling 40,312 votes.
But because Mr Alston failed to get 50 per cent of the vote, second preference votes were counted.
In the end, Mr Alston was declared winner.
Mr Alston polled 62,350 and Mr Thwaites received 58,664.
Mr Thwaites said: “I am obviously very sorry I have missed out on becoming the first Essex Police and Crime Commissioner.
"I’d like to thank everyone who did vote for me, and also I’d like to give special thanks to all my family, friends and supporters who have worked tirelessly to help me in my election campaign.”
He added “I’d like to wish Nick Alston all success as the first elected Essex Police and Crime Commissioner and hope they can use their position to put the voice of the people of Essex back at the heart of policing.
"I will now be taking some time to recover from the campaign trail and consider my future.”

I was convinced by Alston's military service, his actions in Northern Ireland and the comparative incompetence of his rivals.
I voted for him and I won't apologise for it.

Who ever this Nick Alston is I wish him well in his new, I presume well paid position.
With due respect to my Alston I feel that the whole excercise was a waste of puplic money which if needed to be spent on this could well have waited untill we were out of finacial restraints the majority of this county and indeed country, is under

Wrong candidate - should be one not affiliated in particular to the party in govt at the moment as he will surely just toe the party line. Shame on you voters. Shame on you Cameron for forcing this election , just as you have the break up of the NHS which was not clear in your manifesto . You will go down in history as the one to blame. Nick Alston had better do right by the residents of Essex or he will surely not get in again.

Unfortunately, politicising the police only plays into the hands of the party/Government who has a commisioner affiliated to them. This is no good for policing as a whole and we will now see different police forces around the country being run with completely differing agendas from each other.

You are a wonderful advert for the reason so many are sceptical. You have made it political. That is despite the Commissioner having to swear an oath of being impartial.
So are you are your a typical Tory supporter and/or party member? If you are the latter trust they will distance themselves from you and kick you out of their party.
For the first time ever I did not vote because I had no idea about any of the candidates.

All those who fail to vote are automatically deemed to have voted for whoever won. In this case, the Tory. The imbeciles who didn't vote because they didn't know the candidates are the most Tory of all. All candidates on the ballot paper had descriptions under their names, so they could have voted for one independent for their first choice, and the other independent for their second choice.
People fought and died for the right to vote, and these idiots - all with computer access - couldn't be bothered to find out what it was all about.

To all those that did not vote, it was not because you did not recieve any leaflets, I did not get any myself so I took the time to look on the internet, your posting on here so you MUST have accress to it too.
A large part of it was pure lazyness, heck you could register to do it by post and just pop it back in the post and not worry about finding the time on the actual day to go and vote.
Still puzzled by the Boris stating:
"All those who fail to vote are automatically deemed to have voted for whoever won. In this case, the Tory"
No they did not vote pure and simple, the Tory did not gain any votes from those that did not vote, nor did the Labour, or anyone they were unused votes nothing more, as for the spoilt papers they were wasted votes.
I'm sure on the News a Labour winner moaned that it was a waste of time and unwanted position so why stand!

Max, what I meant in the bit that puzzled you was: if you don't vote, you obviously have no business complaining about the person who gets elected. That means that, objectively, you support that person.
In yesterday's election, I voted for the candidate who came fourth, hoping to stop the Tory, and also hoping to see off the loonies of ED and UKIP. Well, at least I helped achieve the last two objectives. Just a pity that I chose the wrong Independent to vote for. Anyway, Mr Alston got elected, as you would expect in a Tory-dominated county, so now he's there, good luck to him, and let's hope he does a decent job.

Is it known how much money the Essex Tories threw at this election? I actually got a leaflet from Mr Alston, the only candidate who distributed one in my area. Which leading Tory used his Essex County Council credit card to pay the printer's bill?

Let us just say that I am a liberal who believes in PUNISHING criminals instead of 'understanding' them.
You say I have politicised this issue? How so? I feel the responsibility to vote. I will not fault anyone here for not doing so. You must all act according to your own conscience.
But I personally have a zeal and passion for the democratic process. And in this election, the Conservative was the only one who seemed to have the experience necessary to take Essex back from the vandals and pond-life who have made life unbearable in areas like Canvey Island.
I did not vote for him because he was a Conservative. It may shock you to learn that I have become disenchanted with Cameron and view him as an arrogant, vicious paper tyrant. Trying to privatise both the police and the NHS, threatening the sanctity of the Ecuadorian embassy, insulting our European allies, pimping out his office via Peter Cruddas. I have grown to HATE our Prime Minister. I wish that wasn't so, but it is.
I voted for Alston based purely on the easily-accesible statements each candidate made. It was a pragmatic decision, not one motivated by any kind of partisan bias.

My cousin in Colchester inadvertently gave 5 votes to Thwaites and what a mistake that was, however they ticked Nick as the second choice box.
As Nick did not get the 50% required the second choice votes where taken into account thank the good lord.
Thwaites was the choice because the old bill wanted him in the post for their own nepotistic reasons.
Alston is the ideal candidate with the background and pedigree of James Bond.
The ideal person for Essex with the Licence to kick backsides into touch.
One hopes and prays that he does not get too cosy with his feet under the table, as some of the Tory predecessors. One liners and sarcastic responses to complaint letters was the general order of the day with past Police Authority Chairpersons well done Nick now lets have some Nick on both sides of the coin. What a joke how can you vote for a guy that is working for a government that has done more to harm Essex Police than any Government since 1840.
It is madness the people that voted for Alston have just blindly voted for a party representative that is unable to improve anything with a 20% cut.
Crazy, crazy Tory voters.

The sad truth is that there were only two candidates with any legitimacy in this election. Two out of six.
Trust me, I WANTED someone to make a convincing case on the more left-wing side. But all I saw were the same failed policies of criminal appeasement that failed during the Blair era and will fail now.

All candidates should have been independent of any political affiliation. As it goes the best person won the job, based on his experience and abilities. However, he is politically affiliated and I would never have voted for him because of this. Had he been independent then I would have turned out to vote for him.
What will the tories do if he does not tow tories policies? And if he does not agree or act within tory policy what is the point of him being a conservative candidate?
Yesterday was a bad day for British policing, allowing politics to steer the agendas of police forces around the country.

I dare say if Garry Glitter had stood for the same party he would have been elected by the blind voters of Essex.
There is no way if you feel a change is needed with Policing that any half wit would vote from a starting point of accepting 20% cuts that is beyond any normal reasonable thinking person.
This decision by that pathetic bombastic Home Secretary Mrs May to fully back this dangerous road to controlling the Police feels me with horror.
Didn't a certain person in Germany gain control of the Police.
This Government will go down soon with the worst record in both Law and Order and Policing since 1840.

I have a little more faith in the PCs, I don't think they will lie down and take it when it becomes political. They know that they police by consent and rely on public support, they have a real mandate from the electorate. Perhaps the anti trade union posters will come to thank the Police Federation for standing up for their interests, which no current political party seems able to do.

I also looked online for information on all the other candidates. I didn't vote for Mick Thwaites as I didn't like the idea of a former policeman running the police. Also, without having to spend too muck time searching it was clear that Mick Thwaites is about as independent as Tibet!
Also, the full page colour advert in the Echo from Mick couldn't have been cheap. I would be surprised if a retired copper on a police pension could fund such a campaign, if so they obviously get far too much. His campaign therefore could only have been funded by big businesses. If he was elected I wonder what favours he would have had to pay back?

I wish him good luck in the job, I hope and pray he can both improve Essex Police and I am sure he also hopes he can look at be 20% cut in budget more sensibly.
