Canvey man sentenced to five years after being found guilty of manslaughter
A MAN has been sentenced today to five years’ in prison for the death of a man in Chelmsford during the V Festival weekend.
Jamie Waters, 29, of Andyk Road, Canvey Island pleaded guilty at a previous hearing (October 17) to the manslaughter of 27-year-old Urim Rama, from London, who died following an assault in the early hours of August 19, 2012.
Senior Investigating Officer, DI Martin Pasmore of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "This case highlights the dangers of excessive drinking and the violent anti social behaviour that all too often follows. "Jamie Waters had been drinking heavily that night and he threw a bottle at a completely innocent man and his girlfriend in Duke Street Chelmsford. Together with a drunken friend, he then approached the couple and threatened them.
"Urim Rama, who had been living in the UK for 11 years and was working as an electrician, was also in Duke Street at that time. "He was completely sober and upon seeing Waters behaving so badly he intervened and appealed to them not to fight but to walk away. "His actions were entirely passive and he initially calmed the situation, allowing the couple to walk away.
"Whilst Mr Rama continued to talk to the other man, Waters surreptitiously walked to the side of Mr Rama and without warning punched him once the face. Mr Rama was knocked unconscious by the punch, resulting in him hitting the ground very hard, causing a fatal brain injury.
"Although it is clear that this punch would have caused really serious harm to Mr Rama the investigation did not reveal any evidence to suggest that he intended to cause serious harm or death. "Where death results in these circumstances the offence is one of manslaughter, which still amounts to an unlawful killing." The judge accepted Jamie Waters guilty plea to manslaughter. This decision must be difficult for Mr Rama's family and friends to accept when their loved one has been killed in such a senseless way.
"My heart goes out to Mr Rama's family and I hope that their pain will ease with time. I would also like to thank Mr Rama's family and friends for their patience and cooperation throughout the investigation.”

His actions caused the death of someone, so he should have to suffer just as much, at least a life sentence.
Im going to personally email the court of appeal as this is unduly lenient.

What incentive is there for decent honest people to work hard and be a giving member of society when this happens.
I hope the victim's family and friends are waiting for him when he walks free and deliver real justice.
Yet another out of touch judge who doesnt have a clue.

When will the day come when Judges are elected by the public into their jobs rather then selected by a bunch of over paid doo dars.

That way the judges will have to justify their decisions and face penalties if they are found to be wrong, then maybe they will get it right.

Tougher conditions
Longer sentences
Things are now at the stage where scum like this can kill an innocent man and then get early release from a pitiful sentence, which has been served in prisons which are more like B&B's. Politicians don't listen to the public because "the experts know best".

Everybody knows all the papers write **** just to sell some copies! what a dead end job, just interfering in other peoples lives! It would be a bit different if the press were actually there when the 'INCIDENT' occured wouldn't it, it's funny where they get some of their information from. CONCENTRATE ON YOUR OWN LIFE'S PEOPLE INSTEAD OF JAMIE WATERS who by the way is NOT some thug!! Disgusted!!

This is a quote from the CPS site regarding sentencing guidelines for Single punch manslaughter cases
R v Furby 2 Cr.App.R.(S.) 8 - guideline case
Appellant and deceased were good friends. For a reason that the court regarded as an explicable reaction, the appellant struck a single punch of moderate force to the right cheek, the deceased collapsed to the ground and died due to a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Appellant of good character. Sentence reduced to 12 months imprisonment. Case law cited confirms that if there are aggravating circumstances the sentence could be as high as four years.
5 years seems a fair sentence given the Guilty plea as well

As for Essex person who asked if we can complain about these joke sentences, If you feel the sentence is unduly lenient. Anyone can contact the Attorney General's Office to raise a concern about a sentence and only one complaint is needed to trigger the process. I suggest everyone who does not want this scum, getting drunk and killing you or one of your relatives in 2.5 years contacts them.

Clearly you are a friend/relative and are totally biased, but imagine being on the other side of this. How would you feel if a loved one of yours had been murdered. The feeling you'd NEVER see them again. That is awful enough, but now add in the fact that in 2 or 3 years the murder will be free but your loved one would never be back.
We may not know all the minor details but facts are facts, and that is he took a life and has been given a ridiculously lenient sentence.
And thank you Madmax for the Attorney General info.

You go on believing what a wonderful person this scumbag is, i'm sure the family of the victim must take some comfort from the fact that this mindless, cowardly little pond life called Jamie Waters isnt a thug in your eyes. And when you say concentrate on your own lives I would bet my house the Victim would loved to be able to if he could...nuff said..

5 years does seem fair.
It is clear that this is a tragic accident, many people these days unfourtunaly have 'street' fights and beat each other senseless. They usually end up walking away with cuts and bruises and no police charge. It was unlucky in this case that someone died from one punch.Of corse it was also unlucky for the family of the albanian man involved (did he have underlying head problems to have died with one blow!?) but this sentence will not bring anyone back or change the outcome of that night.
We do not know the full circumstances and therefore should not judge.Paper talk is always over exaggerated to make a story.
We do not know the background of Jamie Waters and he may also be a hard working family man. This can happen to good people who have had to much to drink and get over excited/intimidated.
In 2009,a man was jailed for 3 years for exactly the same offence,it was his best friend he punched and did not have any alcohol intake beforehand...Would you still suggest life for a life?...Dare I say it but I feel racism may play a part here in the way that the deceased man being albanian, the judge did not want to appear rasict.I do not know....
Mr Waters will have to live the rest of his life knowing what he has done and im sure he regrets his actions that night. Is that not punishment?
This happens all too often in this day and age and I suggest the main problem here was alcohol.
The judge knows what he is doing and has obviously taken all factors into consideration.Hence the 5 year sentence.

EssexPerson says...
You point to fights where people beat each other up, this wasnt a fight it was one person attacking another without warning.
Nothing will change the outcome of the night, but at the least the dead mans family need to feel that justice has been done.
And boo hoo that Jamie Waters will have to live with what he did, at least he has that option. At least he has the option of becoming part of society again, having a family life etc.
Anyway, I've made clear my opinion, I'll keep quiet now.

Please take a look if you think this man should recieve the 'death penalty' or life in prison.
People have recieved less for the same thing.

This was not a fight, it was an attack on a man trying to help!
And why get involved? Because he was doing the right thing!
If there was more people like him, there would be less scum like Jamie waters doing these things as they know the majority would stop them!

No need to get personal.I am expressing my views and opinions on this website just like everyone else.Your correct that it wasnt a fight,it was one punch.
Im sorry I do not agree with peoples suggestions of death or life imprisonment.
Jamie Waters made his decision.Urim Rama made his decision and above all the judge has made his decision.
I have nothing else to say.
There are worse things happening in the world.
