A MAN has died after a dinghy capsized off Southend seafront this afternoon.

 An air ambulance landed on Southend seafront after two men were brought to shore by the RNLI.

The pair had to be plucked from the sea near Thorpe Bay yacht club at about 2.30pm today by the RNLI.

A man in his seventies was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second man was taken to Southend Hospital with suspected hypothermia.

Very sad for this man's family at Christmas but what on earth was he doing in a dinghy in this cold weather at 70 years that's just asking for trouble.

The man who died was my uncle. He was a man who lived each day as if it was his last! He played tennis, was extremely fit but unfortunately, it just goes to show you just how delicate life can be. Rest in peace uncle Jack...you will be missed so very much.

I think everyone is assuming Dinghy means sailing dinghy but I think it was a rubber dinghy that was being rowed, by the sounds of it it happened as they were climbing aboard a moored boat. that would make more sense.

The man who died was married to my cousin and the other man in the boat is my uncle. It is a terrible tragedy and my uncle is absolutely distraught. We all know the sea is very unforgiving but i know my uncle would not have taken any chances and had a lifetime of experience around boats and water. They had life jackets and went out on a calm day, apparently on a routine trip. This is a tragic, tragic accident and could not have been helped, it is not something to blame on anyone and age is not a factor as both men were fit and active. My sincerest condolences to his wife and children. We are all thinking of you.
