Misery for rail commuters in south Essex as fares increase by up to £124 (From Echo)

Not that bad, all things considered, you've got a brand new bridge at Benfleet, comfy air conditioned carriages, with spacious seating arrangements, with lots of deoartures during the working hours.

There is never anyone at Chalkwell Station in the evening, and on the few occasions each year that I use the train to London I have never seen a ticket Inspector on the trains. I wonder how much they could reduce the fares if everyone paid for their journey, it is getting to the point where the penalty fares will soon be cheaper than the actual fares.

No heating on trains, not enough seats, lifts not always working. Not always manned for assistance. What exactly are we paying for. is it now a ghost service ?

Look on the bright side, taxpayers are contributing a third of the costs of running the railway. Or to put it another way, the fares need to go up another 50 percent before you are paying the full cost of your transport. All those who cycle to work are still contributing to the price of your ticket through their taxes, and that is why there should be tax relief for the cost of a bicycle if you use it to cycle to work.

Do you know that a lot of back office jobs only pay around £15k a year and is not much more than locally, but some people have no choice to travel to London as that is the only place they can find work, rather than ponce off the dole like others, but its becoming more more worthless. My point is that 99% of people can make a cut back or sacrifice in another area of their expenses to compensate the rise in rail fares.

In regards to the train fare rises, people would need to save around £3 per week elsewhere to cover the cost. So dont tell me that is not doable.

I know this because ive had to do it a number of times due to increased travel costs and the spiralling costs of childcare.

Greater Anglia is a disgrace of a trainline.

Countless time's the trains have been cancelled with no reason, countless times there has been signal failure..

The seats are disgusting (when you actually manage to get one) Thankfully i'm quite skinny so the size isn't to big a problem.. until some fat f*ck sits down and takes up two seats and you're left standing after spending a fortune.

If we're paying all this money..the trains should be refurbished and more carriages added during peak times.
It is annoying enough getting on at stratford and the train is crammed full of people.. But that doesn't come close to how angry i feel when my train is cancelled.. i stand there for another 20 minutes and then the smallest train in the world arrives and you're squashed in like sardines.

Total joke and I can't believe they have the audacity to put it up every year.

paid out £3540 in november for an annual ticket... not even into zone 1.. and my gold card discount only applies off peak?! Disgusting.

If I drive to work, all 50 miles of it, I would pay £3,600 in petrol a year (48 weeks). In addition, I would pay £638 on the Dartford Toll (with Dart Tag), which would be easier than driving through Central London.

I will get stuck in traffic, often arrive late unless I leave extremely early, and all this doesn't include the wear and tear on my car. 2,000 miles a month will take its toll on tyres, brakes etc.

An annual season ticket with travelcard on c2c for myself is £3,632. Sitting or standing doesn't really bother me, there's often space even if I am at the back of the train. Already I'm saving over £600 a year on my commute.

And the price rise? Less than £10 a month. Disaster...

And as for the 'funding of the railways' argument - it's doing a good sight more than my tax and VAT for petrol is for the road network...

however no I can't just "get into my car" because as a young female driver my car insurance is now going up, so i'll be forking out more on that come June time when my insurance is up for renewal.

Oh and the ever increasing costs of petrol will add up to the equivalent if not more than the trains, plus the wearing of my tyres, the mileage on my car.. driving into london, sitting in traffic burning through petrol, so i can pay out more.

The cost per mile is much cheaper on c2c than most other railways coming into London. We have superb trains, refurbished stations, some of the best service levels in the country and is a lifeline to Southend (it's basically a town metro service with 7 stations in the borough).

However, I do feel for the poor commuters on the Greater Anglia line. I'd object (if it did any good) on price rises to an already expensive service whilst I have to clamber onto dirty trains from the eighties!

i often use the liverpool street line and have had no complaints. if you get on at southend victoria or prittlewell the alternative is walk to southend central.

Small point but National Express no longer run this line, it's run by Abellio and is called "Greater Anglia". As far as I'm aware, it's no greater than before though!

Yes, C2C are good. But why does the price keep ON going up above inflation? I understand this is a government effort to reduce rail subsidy but all the public get are "stories" about future investment.

Don't understand this argument at all.

Benefits are funded by the taxpayer, but not everyone gets any.

Health care is funded by the taxpayer, but not everyone uses it.

Roads are funded by the taxpayer, but not everyone owns a car.

Universities are subsidised by the taxpayer, but not everyone has a university education.

This is the way the public sector works in this country. Why should rail travel be different? Or are you suggesting that all public services should only be paid for by those that use them? (And I realise that rail services are privatised, but they still form a vital part of our public infrastructure).

The real problem here is that the government has absolutely no control over the spiralling costs of the rail industry - this is why I believe we have the most expensive railways per mile in Europe, and until the government gets a grip then rail travel will continue to cost both commuters and taxpayers more than it should.

Oh paying for parking too at work :)

High time these women paid a fair share of the motor insurances, so many accidents of late, with women on their i phones, texting on phones, talking on phones, I say double the insurance for any caught.....

The points are, yes people MAY be able to cut back on other expenses but why should they just to give CEO's and shareholders increased profits and bonuses ?, plus bear in mind that people have already cut back to pay for huge increases in gas, electricity, petrol, food and insurance..peopl's pockets are not infinately deep. The government is always going on about 'making work pay', yet at the same time doing nothing about this tax on effectively commuters/workers.

48% of rail fares goes to network rail, that is a huge figure, what do they do for the money ?..does the rail network need that much money ?, many would argue it does not.

As for working locally, I would love to, point me to a half decent IT job locally, there is very little locally.

As for the cost, plenty of other countries provide a far better rail service at a fraction of the cost (to both taxpayers and commuters), some countries such as France run trains at speeds we could only dream of.

I have seen no noticeable improvement on my line (C2C0, trains are slower and other lines such as greater anglia just get worse and worse and they charge even more than C2C, a return to london is now over £10 more than c2c !

stick to IT matters as patently you have zero clue. they should cut back because if the costs of running the railways increase so do the price of tickets (or should private companies run at a loss?). either that or get a better paid job. the rail users should swallow fare increases and not the taxpayer. c2c is a great service. you want french trains - go to france and pay 75% income tax.

One way to protest about these price rises would be for everyone with a season travelcard to fill up every train on the circle line one Saturday or Sunday, preferably a day when there is a big event in London.

People in this country amaze me. We love to moan but always fail to take any action. Governments don't listen unless people take direct action. I have a lot of respect for the people in countries who do take action and force change. Here we just moan and let the government screw us day by day (and Yes I know the railways are in private hands but that just makes it more convenient for the government eh?) Don't moan ACT!
