Picture Palace Cinema Shoebury reborn as Art Deco apartments
9:10am Thursday 24th January 2013 in Local News By David Trayner
The new flats in Ness Road
THE demolished facade of a 1913 cinema has been rebuilt as part of new Art Deco-style apartments.
Scaffolding has been removed to reveal a new four-storey block on the site of the former Picture Palace Cinema in Ness Road, Shoebury.
Workmen have spent ten months painstakingly replicating the historic landmark’s curved facade, demolished last March after plants were found growing through its crumbling stonework.
Paul Seager, director of architects ACS Design, said: “We are pleased with the scheme.
“It has been a talking point and added to the regeneration of that corner.
“It’s nice to create a building where we had the opportunity to work with that kind of design.”
The eight flats over three storeys with a retail unit on the ground floor are expected to open in March, after workmen finish fitting out the interior.
The architects firm, based in Nelson Street, Southend, moulded the old cinema’s facade before it was demolished and copied it into the new building.
They have used the period’s Art Deco style as inspiration for the flats behind the facade, replacing the original’s square “shed-style” body.

As it goes the building looks great, and the addition of what's rumoured to be a Tesco Express will be much appreciated!

Not by local shopkeepers. It is ridiculous how many Tesco stores there are in the Southend Borough. Eleven at last count. Another proposed in central Southend, and one possibly in Ness road brings that to THIRTEEN Tesco in one town.
Welcome to Tesco-on-Sea.

In West Rd there are greengrocer, butcher, Co-op, newsagent, chemist, Rossi shop.
In Ness Road there are plumbers, car parts, newsagents, off licence, multiple takeaways of differing types.
In Shoebury High Street there are newsagent, chemist, general store, bakery indian and chinese takeaways and restaurants.
All of those shops are less than half a mile from the Garrison development. How blo0dy lazy are Garrison residents that they can't walk that far?

The Garrison is nice if you like living in the middle of nowhere - plus it's surrounded by chavs!

Leigh is surrounded by chavs on all sides via Westcliff, Canvey, Hadleigh and Eastwood! And to be frank, most of the Garrison residents do like living in peace - I've spoken to many who moved here from Leigh, citing overcrowding, airport noise (a massive factor now) and just wanting to get away from feeling like you're living in London.
I just object to statements like the idiotic "shame it's in Shoebury". People pay a lot of money to live here, just take a look on right move - there are just as many expensive properties in Shoebury as there are in Leigh and Thorpe Bay. As for pubs and bars, there's quite a strong reason why Thorpe Bay has next to zero and is the most expensive place to live on the c2c line, by a mile! Families don't want all that rubbish!

Either way I've lived in Shoebury for most of my life and can't really see any justification for your "scummy" remarks.
Yes there are areas that are scummy and nasty.... I avoid them like the plague but most of the Shoebury I feel quite safe to walk around at night.
Let's face it, with maybe the exception of Thorpebay..... Southchurch, Southend, Westcliff, Leigh, Eastwood, Benfleet etc all have areas that are nicer than others and areas that you just don't go near.

Back off topic (battle of Shoebury Vs Leigh).
Shoebury has some nice areas.
Leigh has some nice and EXPENSIVE areas.
Shoebury has some, not quite so nice areas.
Leigh has a quite a lot of not quite so nice areas. I say quite a lot but this is due to the fact that it covers quite a large area with a larger population density.
Leigh has, in general, always been a nice place to live but for one or two reasons (and I do not buy into aircraft noise for one bit) is on the decline.
Shoebury had a reputation of being not so nice. However, it is most definately on the up.
The smart money is on Shoebury to be the desirable area to live in the not to distant future.

nton and then the Seafront part. It also borders Thorpe Bay which gives a lot of Shoebury residents the movement across the property ladder as they grow older.
What really makes me mad is when Shoebury does try to gentrify (on topic by the way), ensuring good architecture is restored nicely like in the Garrison (e.g. Officer's Mess, Terraces, the Old Hospital, the Visitor Centre, the Chapel, the list goes on), this building, the Shoebury Hotel, and let's hope the old Hinguar School, people rubbish the place!
There's a really nasty whiff of Leigh residents believeing they are better than the rest, with no basis other than they live a couple of miles closer to London!

/Avon Way part. As for needing another shop, that is tosh as West Road is fine for getting a few bits although Co-Op is pricey. My main concern around here is the traffic and road layout and peoples parking in and around this area! Accident waiting to happen IMO!

Lets not put shoebury down, it is like leigh a historical part of the district and has much going for it.
Maybe as TOWIE chavs have gained their foothold in the broadway more people will look at moving out to the slightly more relaxed bits of the town where people dont pass through.

Leigh v Shoebury..come on get a life you saddos.
Try doing something for your own community rather than peering over the fence and knocking what your neighbours may or may not have...
And then you lot reach a barrel scrapping low by trying to out do it each other on house prices ..which reveals just how empty your lives have become.
DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!
