Care home nurse accused of forging patient's medical record

A CARE home head nurse could be struck off over allegations she falsified medical records of a patient who died while under her care.

Philomena John worked as senior sister and department manager at the Bupa-run Godden Lodge Nursing and Residential Home at Hart Road, Benfleet, in 2010 and 2011 when it is alleged she failed to care for three patients.

The case will be heard at a Nursing and Midwifery Council fitness to practice tribunal in central London next month when it will be alleged that she did not ensure a resident’s family were informed of the deterioration in their condition between January 21 and January 30, 2011.

She is then accused on January 30 of falsely telling the family that the patient had seen a GP on January 21 when the patient hadn’t and then falsified medical records to suggest they had.

Ms John is charged with telling the deputy manager of the care home on or about January 31 that the cause of death of the patient was pneumonia when she had no idea at that stage what killed the person.

A separate charge alleges her actions were dishonest. Ms John also faces charges in relation to two other residents treated from 2010.

If found guilty Ms John could be struck off, suspended, given an official warning, put under restricted duties or forced to undergo training.

A spokesman for Bupa said: “We dismissed and referred Philomena John to the NMC two years ago when she failed to meet the high standards of care we expect.”
