A CHARITY turfed out of its base by Basildon Council has been offered money to help it find a new home.

Bosses at disability charity DIAL were left fuming when they were told they could not stay at the Basildon Centre in St Martin’s Square as the council needed to free up some space at its headquarters.

The decision threatened the charity’s future, but the council has now stumped up £5,000 to help with its relocation costs and could give it a further £10,000 over the next two years.

Jan Stevens, who runs DIAL, which stands for Disablement Information and Advice Line, said: “The money will help us immeasurably. Although we are still dissapointed to be leaving the centre this will certainly give us a boost.”

DIAL have managed to find a base in Southernhay although will only have a maximum six month tenancy and could be evicted with just one month’s notice.

Cllr Terri Sargent, cabinet member for community, says: “DIAL have requested help towards their relocation costs and I am pleased to say that around £5K has now been agreed by councillors. Along with this support, a recommendation is due to be taken to cabinet in March to continue our £10,000 contribution towards this service for a further two years.”
