Trickster poses as police officer to con bank details

A TRICKSTER has been conning people out of their bank details by posing as an Essex police officer.
 

The man calls people at random and tells them their bank details have been found in possession of people who have been arrested.
 

The man claims to be an officer called Sgt James Hackett and tells people to call him back on the non-emergency 101 number.
 

But, victims have been fooled into thinking they are calling the non-emergency number and one person from Epping Forest was tricked into handing over their bank details.

If Sgt Hackett don't hang up the line will still be open....so 9 times out of 10 the person getting scammed will put the phone down and dial 101 right away...then Sgt Hackett will 'answer' the call(as he is still on the end of the blower)...thus giving the people getting scammed a false feeling of it being genuine, then handing over the details.

and Sgt James Hackett just don't feel like a real Police name..well for me anyway.

I never knew that, very interesting.

This is why I like site, the reporting may leave a lot if be desired but you can learn a lot from the comments.

And whats more a detective might well do the investigating in a fraud case and not just a uniformed 'Sgt'....so maybe a DS James Hackett..or more than likely a DC James Hackett would have more suited the roll.
