New travellers site in Basildon given green light

PLANS to create a new traveller site in the borough have been given the go-ahead.

Councillors on Basildon's cabinet last night agreed to lease land at the junction of Gardiners Lane South and Gardiners Close in Basildon from the Homes and Communities Agency.

It will then be used to house a 15 pitch site.

The land had already been given planning permission following a sucessful application by the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain.

The move comes despite opposition from businesses and residents in the road.
