FLIGHTS to Edinburgh will soon be leaving Southend Airport, due to popular demand.

The historic capital of Scotland becomes the latest destination to be offered from the booming airport.

The easyJet flights will head north of the border every day of the week, except Saturday, from May 2 with fares starting from as little as £27.49 one way.

It will take just over an hour to get to the cultural hotspot, famed for its castle and all year-round culture including the Edinburgh Festival – a collection of several festivals including the popular Edinburgh Fringe and new year’s Hogmanay street party.

Alastair Welch, the airport’s managing director, confirmed: “Edinburgh has been the most requested domestic flight by our passengers and we are looking forward to giving people a chance to use their local airport to fly up to Scotland.

“Edinburgh is a very strong destination - and a very popular place to go."

The Airport's first depature to Venice also took place on Friday, and airport bosses celebrated by recreating the city's canals in the departure terminal.
