POLICE, responding to reports of a burglary, uncovered a makeshift cannabis factory by chance in the bedroom of a home.

Officers had received reports of a burglary at the terraced house in Vincent Way, Billericay on Wednesday evening after the glass in the window of the front door was smashed.

Arriving at the property to investigate the break-in yesterday on Thursday police found the front door was completely shattered.

But when they tried to speak to the man living at the home he refused to let officers in.

However, after smelling the distinct aroma of cannabis, officers climbed through a tiny broken glass panel in the front door where they uncovered the drugs den.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis. He remains in police custody where he is being questioned.
