A TRAVELLER family, including a grandmother recovering from a brain tumour, face being kicked off green belt land after they were refused permission to stay.

Rochford District Council has thrown out an application to extend permission for the Pear Tree site in New Park Road, Hockley, and add two more caravans, despite an emotional plea from one of the family.

Applicant Hanna Doran said her mother needed another caravan while she recovers from brain surgery and her son needs one to start a family, but councillors felt it would mean overdevelopment of the countryside.

Council leader Terry Cutmore, speaking at a development control committee meeting, said: “Rules are there and there are rules for a reason.”

Temporary leave for two caravans and a mobile home on the site granted in 2008 ran out in December, so the family now have no permission to stay and may face enforcement action forcing them out.
