Women spread Facebook warning about accosting

WOMEN are spreading the word on Facebook about a man trying to attack them on Canvey.

The social networking site is being used to warn women about the man who attacked people in Long Road.

Jade Hilton started the warnings after she was approached while cycling along the road.

Since then another woman and a 12-year-old girl have both sent her messages to say that they were approached in similar circumstances.

Miss Hilton said: “A man started following me on his bike and asked me to pull over so he could talk to me. I turned looked at him and realised I had no idea who he was. I carried on going and he kept asking me to pull over I said no. He then got angry and was shouting "pull over now!" He got faster and tried to grab me.”

The woman said the incident happened at about 7.15pm last Monday and she reported it to the police.

She then took to Facebook to spread the word and was shocked other people had also been targeted.

A spokesman for Essex Police said that only one report had been made to officers so far, but encouraged other women to come forward if they have been approached in similar circumstances.

The man is aged 50 to 60, of medium build, and was wearing a distinctive Russain-style hat with flaps to the side. Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

So the other women who were 'attacked' thought it was so serious they just posted it on facebook rather than contact the Police.

What do they expect the Police to do if they don't report it?

You get swifter 'justice' from the court of public opinion, obviously. Maybe he has come to save Sarah Connor and wants to know why there are no phone books in the telephone kiosks?

Maybe he just got annoyed because he was being ignored.
l think it`s quite rude actually to just ignore someone who makes a polite request, as he did at first, regardless of if you know him or not.
l am 66 and a cyclist too, if he had asked me this in a normal way l WOULD at least have slowed down to see what he wanted to say.

I'm with Almeda11, the poor bloke probably needed assistance & found her rude & obnoxious, so lost his rage a bit.

Jade was probably spooked & genuinely believes he was a nutter.

The rest of em are most likely attention seekers or drama queens.

Either way, I there as been no 'attack' as far as I can see.

You say he may or needed some help, that may be the case BUT... There would have been a local shop or somewhere he could have asked, he didn't have to tell a YOUNG girl riding down the street on her own at that time of night to STOP!

I'm a cyclist but would NEVER stop for anyone that asked me to, if u need help then ask in a shop. Simple! There's planty of them around in every area...

To be fair, posting on Facebook nowadays is more likely to get results than leaving it in the hands of our so called investigative police units...

Perhaps she stopped at some point and he wanted to berate her about leaving her personal property on the highway.

If the article is true what Jade Hilton is claiming, he tried to grab me, then that in its self raises a bit of suspicion to me. I think this was a genuine attempt of maybe a mugging or rape. And he obviously knew the area, because if he was on his bike cycling, his more then likely to be from Canvey. So the 'asking for directions' is rubbish to me.

l can imagine a young girl being scared, particularly as it was dark, but any person over the age of around 20 or so should be mature enough not to get spooked, and at least try and help.
ok so maybe he should have used a shop, maybe he didn`t know the area and was lost.
l don`t live on Canvey so don`t know if Long Rd has shop in it or not, but it`s probably not the first thing you would think of if there was another cyclist nearby.
As a society this country has become far too scared and timid of everything, unless they`re drunk, then they often have a big mouth and become aggressive, l think a friendly and helpful attitude goes a long way in warding OFF unwanted attention, not bringing it on, and l think it`s a shame we`ve lost the ability, particularly in southern england, to show a bit of warmth and understanding to another human being, and for the record l am 66 and female, and there isn`t much l fear!
