THE boss of an illegal massage parlour has been fined for operating outside the law.

Suzanne King, of Church Road, Benfleet, ran Secrets, in Southchurch Road, Southend, without a licence, despite repeated warnings from council chiefs.

She was stung with a £400 fine and ordered to pay costs of £345 when she appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday. Tony Cox, the Tory councillor responsible for public protection at Southend Council, said: “It is essential for premises which are legally required to be licensed to comply with this requirement.

“This enables us to monitor their operations and conduct the relevant inspections to make sure relevant standards are being met, so members of the public are not put at risk.”

Under the Essex Act 1987, all premises which offer treatments such as massages, chiropody; sauna or other therapeutic must be licensed by the council.

The system is designed to prevent illegal outlets popping up across the county with no control over what services they are offering.

A 5 minute internet search shows quite clearly that it's a brothel, not a massage parlour so they're likely to be breaking a few more laws than just running a parlour without a licence.

That sort of detective work is beyond the abilities of the local plod though...
