FIVE people were arrested on Chalkwell beach yesterday on suspicion of being illegal immigrants...shortly after a kayaker found a metrelong unexploded bomb.
Police were called to the packed beach at about 11.45am to assist the coastguard after the suspected Second World Wardevice was found out at sea.
It had been noticed in low tide by a kayaker, who decided to drag it within 200 yards of the shore.
The police were keeping watch while the bomb situation was being assessed by the coastguard officials.
Police then noticed five people bait-digging and cockle picking nearby and officers went to make enquires.
A police spokesman said: “Three women and two men, from south London, were arrested.
“They have been detained on suspicion of entering the UK illegally.”
