Talks still ongoing over future of Grand in Leigh
11:50am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Local News
THE future of Leigh’s Grand Hotel is still not resolved.
Businessman and former reality star Mick Norcross has been negotiating on the lease for the building for many months.
In September, he told the Echo terms had been agreed in principle to purchase the lease to the building from the Spirit Group pub company and that work could start within weeks.
But the brewery firm has said talks are still ongoing.
A spokesman said: “The latest update is that we are still in negotiations.”
Leigh Town Council is fully supportive of the plan to renovate the hotel into a boutique hotel with a spa, restaurant and piano bar.
However, councillors admit to feeling frustrated at the time it is taking for work to begin.
When it starts, it is hoped work to restore the Grade II-listed building and create 20 bedrooms will take 18 months.
Former town council chairman, Carole Mulroney, wants answers over when work will finally get underway.
She said: “We are getting mixed messages.
“One minute we’re told everything is sorted and he’s getting on with it, then when the Echo speaks to the people negotiating, it’s not all done and dusted.
“Its incredibly frustrating for the people of Leigh.
“We have changed our planning for the Christmas lights switch on to move the fairground from the front of the Grand to the large public car park behind there twice now thinking work may well be underway or imminent.”
She expressed concerns about the condition of the building the longer it is left.
She added: “Its deteriorating which is sad because its a wonderful building.
“I haven’t met anybody in Leigh who doesn’t want it to get moving, so please let’s move on with it.”
The Echo tried contacting Mr Norcross, but he was unavailable for comment.
