We've got the best soul in the country

CANVEY’S rich music history seems set to continue after a club on the island was crowned one of the best venues for soul in the UK.
Soul By the Jetty was launched in 2009 to pay homage to rock legends Dr Feelgood and the island’s best loved night club of the Seventies and Eighties, the Goldmine.
The events see music lovers pack out the Lobster Smack pub, in Haven Road, every other month to take a step back in time and dance the night away to soul, jazz, swing and funk classics from the past.
Now, as the organisers get set to mark their fourth anniversary this Saturday, it seems they have another reason to celebrate after Soul Survivors magazine voted it the top soul club outside London.
Jonny Layton, who runs Soul By the Jetty, said: “We are absolutely over the moon. We came second last time the contest was run two years ago, and this year we managed to see off some stiff competition, which is a real achievement.
“I think the reason it is so popular is because it is a good place to relax and dance away like its 1981. It’s like a family gathering, everyone comes together and enjoys themselves and we never have any trouble because it’s all people who genuinely love the music.
“Canvey has such a rich music history so it is important for us to keep that alive.”
The name Soul By the Jetty is a nod to the Dr Feelgood album Down By the Jetty released in 1975.
Music lovers are being invited to celebrate the achievement at a special Forties-theme night this weekend.
The event will run from 8pm on Saturday.
