Video: The moment bomb squad carried out controlled explosion of hand grenade after discovery in Basildon

THIS is the moment the Ministry of Defence detonated a First World War hand grenade on Billericay farmland.
A controlled explosion had to be carried out after builders discovered the bomb while clearing a council property in Fairview Road, Basildon.
A bomb disposal team from the Royal Logistic Corps, based at Colchester’s Army barracks, was drafted in to safely remove the explosive while police cordoned off the street.
They then drove across Basildon searching for a safe place to explode the device. The housing estate was obviously not suitable, so it was carefully moved to Mopsies Park, Pitsea surrounded by a convoy of council officers and police.
That was also believed to be too busy, as was Gloucester Park.
It was eventually moved to Barleylands in Billericay, at about 6pm last Tuesday, after management gave permission for the bomb disposal unit to enter the site.
